PhD Position at Uppsala University

Do you want to pursue a PhD in a supportive and friendly international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employee development and offers safe, favorable working conditions? We invite you to apply for a PhD position at Uppsala University.

The Faculty of Languages at Uppsala University conducts teaching and research in several classical and contemporary languages and cultures, as well as linguistics and language technology. This diversity of linguistic, literary, and cultural orientations forms a core of humanities research and also lays a sustainable foundation for fruitful collaborations within the faculty, as well as with other scientific fields and society at large.

The Department of Modern Languages has approximately 60 employees who primarily conduct research and teaching in a large number of languages within both linguistics and literary studies.

Two PhD positions are now available at the department with a focus on language or literary studies in Finno-Ugric languages, Romance languages, Slavic languages, or German. You can find the department's research areas here (https://www.uu.se/institution/moderna-sprak/forskning). You will also find researchers' profiles; note that even though the researchers specialize in certain areas, they are qualified to supervise PhD students in related fields as well.

Responsibilities:

The PhD education comprises four years of full-time studies and is funded through employment as a PhD student at the Department of Modern Languages. Institutional duties, such as teaching, may (by agreement) be included in the work up to 20 percent of full-time. The PhD student is expected to participate in and contribute to the activities of the department.

Qualifications:

The basic eligibility for PhD education is met by those who:

  • have obtained a master's degree, or
  • have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
  • have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

To be eligible for admission to PhD education, in addition to the basic eligibility, candidates must also have specific eligibility. The specific eligibility is regulated in the general study plan for PhD education in each subject at Uppsala University:

  • Finno-Ugric languages (https://www.uu.se/download/18.7772cd27191974d3b2e21214/1725368608489/ASP%20Finsk-ugriska%20spr%C3%A5k%202021.pdf)

Assessment Criteria:

Admission to PhD education is prepared by a working group at the department and decided by the head of the department. The assessment is based on the candidates' ability to benefit from PhD education. Special emphasis is placed on the quality of the candidates' independent work, previous academic results, and the dissertation plan. The working group's assessment also takes into account the department's ability to supervise the respective candidates' various projects. Candidates who are shortlisted for the position may be invited for interviews.
