Subject Description

The subject of the position encompasses landscape management with a focus on operational and organizational perspectives. The operational level of landscape management includes the establishment and maintenance of outdoor environments, primarily parks, urban vegetation, nature-based solutions, and similar, with a focus on urban environments. The operational level addresses concrete, practical aspects of landscape management, related to policy and tactical levels. Organizational perspectives mainly encompass leadership and governance, but also how legal, economic, and technical aspects, such as digital technology, relate to operational management of landscapes.

Landscape management from operational and organizational perspectives addresses many current societal challenges, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and urban densification, through work with establishment and maintenance. Therefore, contributions to how operational management can complement strategic and tactical management are central to the position.

Job Responsibilities

The university lecturer is expected to be responsible for teaching, research, and collaboration within the subject of the position. The work is expected to be carried out in collaboration with colleagues within the department and SLU, as well as in national and international collaborations.

The university lecturer is expected to develop the subject and particularly:

  • develop, lead, and conduct successful research within the subject of the position
  • develop, lead, and conduct teaching in the subject at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
  • supervise students at all levels in the educational cycle
  • actively seek national and international research funding competitively and publish peer-reviewed scientific articles
  • continuously develop as a teacher and develop pedagogical leadership
  • collaborate and communicate with relevant stakeholders in the landscape industry and society at large
  • contribute to the faculty's strategic development through administrative tasks within the subject area, department, and faculty
  • be able to teach in Swedish or another Scandinavian language upon appointment, or no later than four years after the appointment.

The department has a bilingual working environment. The university lecturer will be able to perform most academic tasks in English. However, since Swedish is the university's official working language, the candidate is expected to achieve a functional level of Swedish within four years after taking up the position. The department is committed to providing support to the candidate to achieve this goal.

Eligibility

The applicant must within the subject of the position:

  • have a doctoral degree in landscape architecture, landscape planning, landscape management, urban ecology, urban forestry, engineering, architecture, urban planning, or another relevant subject.
  • be scientifically skilled
  • have demonstrated the ability to obtain external research funding
  • have published their research in high-quality journals relevant to the subject at an international level
  • demonstrated pedagogical skill in teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, including supervision of students
  • have experience of collaboration between academia and the external world
  • completed higher education pedagogical training or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge
  • have good knowledge of written and spoken English

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for employment shall primarily be the degree of such competence that is a requirement for eligibility for employment.

In assessing scientific competence within the subject of the position, the following will be considered:

  • completed research efforts and ongoing research
  • ability to independently initiate and conduct outstanding and innovative research
  • obtained external research funding competitively

In assessing pedagogical competence within the subject of the position, the following will be considered:

  • planning, implementation, examination, and evaluation of one's own teaching
  • supervision and examination at all levels in the educational cycle
  • ability to integrate research and a scientific approach in pedagogical work
  • pedagogical vision

Furthermore, skills in:

  • experience from and knowledge of the Swedish or Scandinavian industry in the establishment and maintenance (operation) of outdoor environments
  • developing and leading activities and staff within academia/university
  • communicating, collaborating, and cooperating with external stakeholders and the surrounding community
  • informing/communicating about research and development work

Specific competence in operational management of outdoor environments, in relation to technical, legal, and/or economic aspects is particularly meritorious.

Good knowledge of Swedish is meritorious.

The assessment of pedagogical competence shall be given equal care as the assessment of scientific competence.
