Job Advertisement: Urban Planner

Vara municipality is in a development phase – with an offensive business environment, major establishments, and extensive expansion projects in both housing, infrastructure, and business areas.

To meet future needs, we are now building a new, stronger organization. We are looking for an urban planner who wants to contribute to a sustainable and attractive municipality through a holistic view, collaboration, and professional planning.

Your Role

The role of urban planner is part of the Planning and Growth Unit within the Community Building Administration, which also includes an Environmental and Building Unit. As of January 1, 2026, these operations will merge with the technical administration to form the Community Sector. The purpose of the merger is to create a robust, cross-functional, and future-proof organization to lead, coordinate, and implement the development projects that are now emerging in the municipality.

As an urban planner within the Community Sector, you will have a strategic and operational role in the municipality's work with physical planning, mobility issues, and sustainable community development. You will work broadly – from comprehensive planning and investigations to concrete analyses and GIS-based decision support.

Your Responsibilities Include:

  • Contributing to the development of sustainable mobility solutions and infrastructure in collaboration with other functions within the sector.
  • Using GIS and CAD as tools to produce maps, planning documents, and analyses to support the planning process.
  • Working with physical planning, analyses, and project management in early stages.
  • Collaborating with colleagues in planning, infrastructure, environment, business, and culture to create a holistic approach in the community building process.
  • Communicating planning issues in an understandable way, both internally and externally, and participating in dialogues with residents, businesses, and politicians.

You will be part of a cross-sectoral approach where planning, technology, and implementation are interconnected – from vision and plan to finished environment.

Your Knowledge and Experience

We are looking for someone with experience in physical planning, community planning, and preferably project management within municipal or regional operations. You have the ability to see the big picture in community building and can switch between analysis, dialogue, and implementation. We would like you to:

  • Have experience with GIS and CAD, as well as the ability to produce and present map material and planning documents.
  • Have an understanding of the planning process according to PBL and related legislation.
  • Be open to change and easily adopt new working methods and digital solutions from a citizen perspective.
  • Have worked with sustainable travel, mobility, or parking planning.
  • Be structured and responsible with a good ability to drive processes forward.
  • Have good communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Value collaboration and easily create dialogue with different target groups.

A formal higher education in urban planning, geography, architecture, traffic planning, or equivalent is required. In addition, great emphasis is placed on your experience, skills, and ability to coordinate and drive planning processes.

At Vara municipality, you will have engaged colleagues and managers, training and development opportunities, as well as benefits in the form of wellness grants.

All employees are also members of our Recreation Association, which organizes sports activities and other leisure and cultural activities, and you will receive discounts on certain events at Vara Concert Hall.

In Vara municipality, we support each other, and it is together with our ethical compass that we achieve our common goals!
