This two-year postdoctoral position is a joint position between the Department of Computing Science, the Department of Computer Engineering, and the Department of Computer Science at the Department of Information Technology. The postdoc will be placed at the Department of Computing Science. In addition to technical collaborations, the group meets regularly and offers an engaging and supportive environment.

Project Description

As exascale computations become increasingly common, the demand for faster and more energy-efficient applications has never been greater. Fundamental kernels and solvers - key components driving large-scale simulations - can consume a significant portion of computational resources. In this project, we combine expertise from three departments to analyze a set of scientific proxy applications using computer arithmetic and verification tools, optimize the software based on knowledge of hardware, and potentially reformulate algorithmic solutions in selected scientific applications.

The goal of the project is to promote sustainable computing science by developing energy-efficient and hardware-optimized software solutions with minimal or no sacrifices in performance and accuracy expectations.

Job Responsibilities

A postdoc is expected to devote their time to the project. The remaining job responsibilities will include teaching at the department, including some administration, up to 20%.

Qualifications

A PhD or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in applied mathematics, computing science, high-performance computing, or related fields. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have obtained their degree within the last three years should be considered. When calculating the three-year time frame, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc.

We are looking for candidates with:

• experience in developing scientific codes, particularly using parallel programming languages,
• good programming (preferably C/C++ and CUDA/HIP) and problem-solving skills
• excellent communication skills with sufficient proficiency in spoken and written English,
• the ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a heterogeneous group.

Desirable/meritorious

Experience in one or more subjects is highly valued:

• analysis and verification of static or dynamic code
• knowledge of computer architectures
• numerical linear algebra

About the Position

The position is temporary for two years according to the central collective agreement. The extent is full-time. Start date is April 1, 2025, or as agreed. Location: Uppsala.
