Description of the Department

The Division of Mathematical Physics is shared between the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and is part of the Department of Physics. Research is primarily conducted in the field of quantum many-body physics, encompassing theoretical nuclear structure physics, nano-physics, quantum information, atomic theory, and material modeling, with numerous collaborations both internationally and within Lund University.

The main focus of the research group where this position is located is quantum theory, specifically computational physics and the modeling of ultracold atomic quantum gases. National and international collaboration will be a natural part of the team's work, including regular on-site visits to our partners in Sweden and abroad.

Being a PhD Student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University.

As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently using appropriate methods, and developing an awareness of research ethics. Additionally, PhD students are given the opportunity to work on projects, develop leadership skills, and enhance their pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.

Subject and Project Description

The PhD project focuses on investigating, describing, and modeling phenomena and properties of ultracold atomic and molecular quantum gases and liquids that can be described within the framework of many-body quantum physics, both theoretically and computationally. You are expected to work within theoretical many-particle quantum physics with an emphasis on numerical methodology. The focus lies on the development of new computational frameworks to describe the properties of ultracold atomic and molecular quantum systems with polar interactions, with a strong focus on the development of the multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method for bosons and fermions, as well as developing new methodologies to describe collective excitations in systems with stronger interactions. The work will involve both analytical developments and numerical implementations and simulations.

Responsibilities

You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral education courses, seminars, and conferences.

Within this project, you will visit our partners, nationally and internationally, for joint work on research projects. The project focuses on investigating, describing, and modeling phenomena and properties of ultracold atomic and molecular quantum gases and liquids that can be described within the framework of many-body quantum physics. You are expected to work within theoretical many-particle quantum physics. The theoretical work will focus on theoretical modeling and understanding of new quantum optical systems of ultracold polar molecules. The work will involve both analytical calculations and numerical simulations.

The responsibilities include contributing to:

  • developing, implementing, and optimizing a multi-configuration-based time-dependent Hartree description of bosonic and fermionic many-particle quantum systems.
  • modeling work in collaboration with experiments.
  • publications on research results obtained in the project.
  • knowledge transfer regarding HPC and coding within the group, as well as responsibility for code maintenance and organizational issues concerning data security and storage.
  • The responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental activities (max 20% of working time).

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below.

General Entry Requirements

You meet the general entry requirements for postgraduate studies if you have:

  • completed a second-cycle degree or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second-cycle level or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Specific Entry Requirements for Physics

You meet the specific entry requirements for physics if you have:

  • at least 30 higher education credits at second-cycle level relevant to the subject area, including an advanced-level project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
  • a Master of Science in Engineering in technical physics or a related field, or a Master's degree in physics or a related field.

Other Requirements

To benefit from the current doctoral education, the following are also required:

  • courses and master's thesis in theoretical physics.
  • previous work within quantum mechanics.
  • excellent knowledge and previous experience in HPC, as well as proven competence in C++ and GPU computing.
  • good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle scientific problems.
  • good ability in written and oral communication.
  • good teamwork skills and ability to work in teams.
  • very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Merits

The following are considered merits for the current doctoral education:

  • previous experience with the MCTDH method (multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree) for bosons and fermions.
  • knowledge of many-particle quantum physics.
