Are you passionate about animal welfare and want to work closely with animals while helping to drive a business forward? Djurskyddet Karlstad is looking for an engaged operations manager who wants to take care of our daily operations and create the best conditions for the animals in our care. The position is full-time with immediate start.

Djurskyddet Karlstad is a non-profit animal welfare association working to help animals to a better life. We run an animal shelter just outside Karlstad (Norra Grava 714), where we care for homeless and neglected cats. The operation is run by employed staff together with dedicated volunteers, and is led by the association's board. We are now looking for an operations manager who will manage the daily running of the animal shelter and, in the long term, help develop the operation as we grow.

About the role

As operations manager, you are the one who makes the daily life of the animal shelter work. You work practically and closely with the cats, receive visitors and maintain external contact, while having overall responsibility for the operation. Currently, you work largely independently together with our volunteers, and as the operation grows, the role will expand with more planning and coordination, and leading and distributing work for additional staff.

This is not a pure office job. The focus is on the practical work at the animal shelter, combined with administration and responsibility.

The job includes among other things:

  • Caring for the daily needs of the cats, such as feeding, enrichment, and socialization
  • Cleaning and tidying boxes, cages, and common areas
  • Monitoring the animals' health and reporting changes
  • Assisting at veterinary visits and administering simple treatments according to instructions
  • Handling feral and shy cats that require special handling
  • Receiving and informing visitors at the animal shelter, as well as guiding people who wish to adopt a cat
  • Planning and carrying out fieldwork
  • Having daily contact via phone and email with private individuals, authorities, veterinarians, and partners in various animal welfare matters
  • Handling administrative tasks such as record-keeping and documentation
  • Collaborating with and supporting volunteers to create a safe environment for the animals
  • Leading the ongoing operations and, as the operation grows, participating in planning, coordinating, and leading the daily work for volunteers and staff
  • Supervising interns, holiday workers, and training any day volunteers

We are looking for you who

  • Have an education in animal care/animal husbandry as the role largely involves practical work with and handling of cats
  • Have good experience handling animals and are confident and calm in handling, even shy and feral cats
  • Are responsible, empathetic, and have a calm demeanor
  • Are structured, self-motivated, and solution-oriented and can drive your work independently
  • Have good communication skills in speech and writing and are confident in meetings with people, both in physical meetings with visitors at the animal shelter and in contact via phone and email, including situations requiring some conflict management
  • Enjoy both independent work and teamwork with colleagues and volunteers
  • Have the ability to familiarize yourself with regulations and policies and put them into practice
  • Have a genuine commitment to animals and their welfare
  • Are flexible and can work according to a schedule, which may include evenings and weekends if the operation requires it
  • Have at least 5 years of work experience
  • Have a B driver's license, as the position involves transportation to and from the vet, etc.
  • Have good computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office

Experience in administrative work, leadership, or from non-profit operations is meritorious, as well as knowledge of cat behavior and animal welfare work. Since the role will grow with more responsibility in the long run, we would like you to have the willingness and ability to develop in line with the operation.

We place great emphasis on your personal qualities, such as personal maturity, high social competence, lack of pretension, willingness to learn, teamwork skills, self-drive, and the ability to create a good work climate. You need to be stress-resistant and able to work focused under occasional strong time pressure towards the operation's set goals and in accordance with its values.

In the work, you also need to understand the special conditions under which a non-profit association operates. You will meet many people who visit or contact us to choose a cat, and we place great emphasis on good quality and a sense of service in all contacts.

We assume that you are or want to become a member of Djurskyddet Karlstad and that you have read up on what our animal welfare association works with and what we require for this role before applying.

About the employment

The position is full-time with immediate start. We apply probationary employment. All employees are covered by a collective agreement.
