Welcome to the Swedish Defence University!

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned institution of higher education within the fields of defence, crisis management, and security. We offer a unique academic environment where civilian and military perspectives meet. We educate civilian and military leaders, experts, and researchers who are tasked with analyzing and managing current and future crisis situations and security challenges.

The Swedish Defence University educates Sweden's officers and leads the academic development of the officer profession. We conduct research in law with a focus on operational law and international law, defence systems, military science, leadership and command, military history, and political science.

The Swedish Defence University is now seeking one or more doctoral students in military science, placed at the Department of Military Studies (IKV) in Stockholm.

Job Description

The doctoral programme consists of four years of full-time studies (240 higher education credits). The central task is to write a doctoral dissertation in military science under supervision (180 higher education credits), but courses (60 higher education credits) are also included in the education. The doctoral position is fully funded for four years. The duties may also include teaching and other departmental service for up to 20 percent of working time, which results in an extension of the employment period by the corresponding time.

IKV is now seeking up to five doctoral students: doctoral students in military science without a specific focus, one doctoral student with a focus on Russian warfare, one doctoral student with a focus on gender, peace, and security, and one doctoral student with a focus on logistics.

Qualifications

To be admitted to postgraduate studies, the applicant must have both basic and special eligibility. Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed an advanced level degree, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

Special eligibility is held by those who have passed courses totaling 90 higher education credits in a social science (or equivalent) subject, of which at least 30 higher education credits in military science or a related subject, e.g., international relations, peace and conflict studies, security studies, or political science. In addition, sufficient knowledge of English is required to be able to benefit from the postgraduate education.
