About the workplace

The University of Gävle is one of Sweden's most popular universities. We offer around 60 degree programs and 330 standalone courses within humanities, healthcare and medicine, social sciences and natural sciences, as well as engineering. We have 19,000 students, 750 employees, and a unified campus in beautiful surroundings.

The university has four strategic research areas focusing on societal challenges: Sustainable urban development, health-promoting work, innovative learning, and intelligent industry.

Since 2023, the University has been part of the European University Alliance EU GREEN, which works to strengthen the quality of higher education in the EU and increase exchange for both students and staff.

The university's vision is The first choice for everyone who wants to make a difference.

We offer among other things:

  • Good working environment: employee surveys show high satisfaction and joy in work
  • Generous wellness allowance, among the best in Sweden's higher education institutions
  • Flexible working methods

The Department of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Sciences educates engineering students and teacher students.

We are now looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Electrical Engineering.

Background and duties

Background

The research area addresses the next generation of digital twins where physics-based modeling, measurement technology, machine learning, and modern digital platforms are combined for analysis, prediction, and decision support. It also provides the opportunity to explore how emerging technologies, such as AI agents, large language models (LLMs), and other data-driven methods, can be integrated into future solutions for industrial digitalization.

Our research focuses on technical systems and industrial processes in collaboration with companies. Therefore, it is common to work with industrial data from sensors and control systems. We also have good laboratory facilities for conducting exploratory studies.

Job duties

  • Conduct experimental investigations in laboratories or in collaboration with industry.
  • Physical and data-driven modeling and control of production systems in the steel industry, which can be electro-hydraulic or electromechanical. Applications include analysis, prediction, and optimization.
  • Development and verification of models in a laboratory environment and/or experimental data from industrial processes.
  • The position includes 20% teaching and supervision of doctoral students.
  • The employment is 100% and lasts for 2 years, with a possible extension to three years.

The workplace is in Gävle, and the majority of working time is located on campus, with close collaboration with colleagues, external partners, and students.

Qualifications

To be employed as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Electrical Engineering, the following are required:

  • A completed PhD in electrical engineering, signal processing, machine learning, or another degree that the employer finds equivalent.
  • Good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English, considering the content and duties of the position.
  • Good ability to collaborate and create good relationships internally and externally through communication skills.
  • Good initiative-taking ability and independence.

To be employed as a Postdoctoral Researcher, preference is given to those who have completed their PhD no more than three years ago. When calculating the three-year time limit, the starting point is the last day of application.

Meritorious qualifications:

  • Good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in Swedish, considering the content and duties of the position.
  • Competence in dynamic systems, applied control engineering, machine learning, and neural networks.
  • Experience in experimental work and laboratory activities, preferably within mechanical engineering.
  • Experience in developing and implementing models and algorithms in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.

The application must include a CV, cover letter, degree certificate, and other documents you wish to submit.
