Unit Manager for the Orchestra School – Shaping the Future of Stockholm's Cultural School

Stockholm – our capital city of millions of dreams, expectations, and ambitions. We work for everyone living here today and in the future. We are now looking for you who want to think big, new, and differently with us – for the people of Stockholm.

Culture is an important part of Stockholm's nervous system and touches millions of people every year. At the Culture Administration, we work together to strengthen cultural life in Stockholm.

We have an open working climate where employees are highly involved in the development. Join us and contribute to a Stockholm that grows with culture!

Stockholm Cultural School is in an exciting phase of development. We are developing our operations to reach more children and young people, broaden our offerings, and create an even more accessible and relevant cultural school across the city. As part of this, a major reorganization is being implemented with the goal of creating even better conditions for leadership, collaboration, and operational development close to the activities.

We are now looking for a Unit Manager for the Orchestra School. We are looking for you who have knowledge of Western classical music or experience with orchestra activities in some form, whether voluntary or professional. This is a role for you who are good at managing established structures and ways of working and driving their further development. You appreciate working with common high goals and have a good ability to find effective operational solutions.

Welcome to us

Cultural School operates throughout the city of Stockholm. In our world, culture is important. We need spaces for culture. Spaces where one can discover, develop, and express oneself. At Stockholm Cultural School, children and young people between the ages of 6 and 22 have this space. Here they have the opportunity for creative activities in their free time in one of the school's many subjects within music, singing, theater, musical, dance, circus, art, and media. Through various events, large and small, students can perform in front of an audience. Teaching is provided in our own premises as well as in schools and other external locations throughout Stockholm.

We offer

We offer a leading position in an engaged operation where we value teamwork and a proactive attitude. You will be part of a larger change and development journey with the goal of broadening the Cultural School's activities, increasing participation, and reaching underrepresented groups.

Furthermore, you are offered employment benefits such as competence development, fitness subsidies, favorable flexible working hours, and opportunities for holiday exchange. Please read more about our benefits and what it is like to work as a manager in the City of Stockholm.

Your role

As a Unit Manager, you have overall responsibility for operations, economy, personnel, working environment, and premises within your unit. You lead, plan, and follow up on operations while also playing a key role in further developing and shaping the operations forward. Both organizationally, pedagogically, and musically.

Several parts of the Cultural School are in development, which means you need to thrive in building phases where working methods, collaboration, and structure continue to develop over time. The role suits you who are motivated by driving change, creating direction, and building long-term sustainable operations together with others.

The role involves responsibility for budget, staffing, scheduling, and resource planning in a daily life with many parallel issues and varying tasks. Financial responsibility and the ability to prioritize and use resources in a sustainable and business-like manner are important parts of the assignment.

You are primarily responsible for collaboration with schools but also with district administrations, libraries, youth clubs, and other external partners such as the Royal Swedish Opera and the Berwaldhall. The role involves many contact surfaces and requires a good ability to navigate in a large and complex organization. You are part of the Cultural School's management group and report to the Area Manager.

Start date is in the autumn of 2026.

Your competence and experience

We are looking for you who have:

  • a university degree in, for example, pedagogy, culture, economics, or social sciences, or alternatively another education combined with experience that the employer assesses as equivalent
  • managerial experience with responsibility for operations, budget, personnel, and working environment
  • experience in pedagogical activities or activities directed towards children and young people
  • experience in orchestra activities
  • experience in change and development work
  • experience working in complex organizations
  • good financial understanding and familiarity with administrative systems
  • excellent knowledge of Swedish in speech and writing
  • good digital competence

It is meritorious if you have:

  • experience with symphony orchestra activities
  • managerial experience from activities with many internal and external collaboration surfaces and stakeholders, e.g., cultural school, study associations, free cultural life, youth associations, or similar.

You are accustomed to working in a goal- and result-oriented manner with a holistic view and have the ability to combine strategic thinking with close and present leadership in everyday life. You have experience leading change processes in an inclusive way that creates sustainable results. You perceive changes in the external environment and take initiative for development. You can lead employees from a strong mission and user focus so that the unit develops a cultural school that is accessible and relevant.

As a person, you are clear, solution-oriented, and collaboration-focused. You lead with both courage and sensitivity and have the ability to create engagement and direction even during periods of change. You thrive in dynamic environments and find it easy to switch between strategic issues and the daily operations of the business. We place great emphasis on personal qualities and leadership ability.
