Project Description
The research project "Sector Coupling and Business Research for Environmental Sustainability (SCORES): Effects on Climate Emissions, Energy Prices, and Economic Benefits as a Result of the Nordic Energy Transition" will address the energy transition in Sweden. This transition involves moving away from fossil fuels and increasing the electrification of industry, where the link between electricity production and consumption (sector coupling) becomes increasingly important as non-discretionary renewable energy (VRE) such as wind and solar power accounts for a larger proportion. Since VRE is intermittent and location-specific, a more flexible energy system is required, with dispatchable production as a complement, for example in the form of hydropower. Flexible producers may have a greater ability to influence electricity prices, which requires mechanisms to mitigate welfare losses. Similarly, transmission planning will need to be adjusted to dampen producers' market power. In the project, game-theoretic models will be applied to identify how producers' market power is affected by sector coupling and to develop methods to predict economic distortions in the electricity market. These insights will support policy development for a welfare-enhancing transition to a sustainable energy system.
Responsibilities
An interdisciplinary approach encompassing economic, technical, and social science perspectives forms the framework for the analysis. A research assistant in the project will investigate incentives for market power within energy storage. Examples of research tasks include:
- Updating and consolidating a database of attributes for the Nordic heat and power sectors.
- Using Nash-Cournot models to investigate strategic behavior within energy storage.
- Developing both open and closed models aimed at analytical solutions with complementary numerical examples.
We welcome applicants from various methodological backgrounds.
Qualifications
A research assistant is employed primarily for research and must have completed a master's degree or hold a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a master's degree.
We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:
- A merit list demonstrating excellent modeling work related to energy systems or environmental policy published in scientific journals.
- A methodological toolkit related to applied mathematics, environmental economics, game theory, or operations research.
- Skills in analytical solution methods for game-theoretic problems and computational implementation of optimization models in GAMS or similar platforms.
- Domain knowledge of the power sector and energy policy.
- A willingness to work collegially as part of an interdisciplinary team and evidence of previous collaboration with researchers from different disciplines.
- Excellent English skills in speech and writing (Swedish is not a requirement).
We are looking for a candidate who can work within a highly interdisciplinary team and an agenda-setting research project. You are responsible, receptive, and a good team player. You are proactive, take responsibility for your tasks, and have a structured work approach. You are accustomed to prioritizing and can maintain an overview of broader goals while delivering on concrete tasks.
