Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Sami are national minority languages in Sweden. Students belonging to any of the national minorities have the right to mother tongue instruction, regardless of whether it is a living language in the home or not. This means that the student has the right to study the language even if it is a beginner's language.

Umeå Municipality WANTS MORE when it comes to the development of teaching in national minority languages, with a particular focus on preschool and younger children. A longer development work is underway with the starting point of finding successful language models for teaching in and of the national minority language for both first and second language speakers.

We are now looking for you who want to contribute to our students continuing to develop their language, culture, and identity!

Employment Type

• One position as a substitute, part-time 70%, starting 2026-08-17 until 2027-01-15.
• One position as a fixed-term appointment, part-time 60%, starting 2026-08-17 until 2027-06-09.

Your Responsibilities

As a mother tongue teacher, you teach students from preschool class to grade 9 together with other mother tongue teachers. The teaching consists of 120 minutes per week and follows the Swedish curriculum.

The role may include the following tasks:

• Plan, implement, and follow up on teaching in the relevant language
• Assess and grade in accordance with current regulatory documents
• Teach students both in person and through distance learning (if necessary)
• Contribute to the development of teaching based on our keywords: language, culture and identity
• Collaborate with colleagues within our Language Hub for national minority languages

Teaching takes place at the student's home school in preschool class to grade 3. From grade 4, teaching may be at another school – in which case we offer bus passes if needed. Distance learning may occur from grade 2, especially in outer areas.

About You

We are looking for someone who is creative, self-reliant, and flexible, and who thrives in a dynamic work environment. You are curious and have a strong desire to both contribute to development and develop yourself. As a person, you easily build good relationships with students, guardians, and colleagues. Furthermore, you have good collaboration skills, are receptive, and can communicate and handle different situations in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. You take responsibility for your tasks and treat others in a accommodating and respectful manner. We place great emphasis on your personal suitability.

Requirements

• Finnish is your mother tongue, or alternatively, you have good and documented knowledge of speaking and writing
• Passed Swedish B/Swedish 2
• Good digital skills
• Pedagogical education and/or pedagogical experience
• Valid extract from the criminal record, due to the Act on Suitability Control

Merits

• Knowledge of additional languages, preferably documented knowledge of Meänkieli
• Category B driver's license and access to a personal car
