Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies

The Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies offers a creative and stimulating work environment with approximately 100 employees. We conduct internationally recognized research, education, and environmental monitoring in the fields of restoration ecology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology, and zooecology. The department has a high proportion of international staff and well-established national and international collaborations that facilitate valuable exchanges.

Subject Description

The subject area for the position is zooecology, focusing on plant-animal interactions in temperate and boreal forest ecosystems. The application areas include forestry, wildlife management, and forest damage. The aim is to develop the knowledge base regarding animal ecology and their interactions with humans, landscapes, and climate.

Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for developing research within the field of zooecology, both generally and specifically within the stated focus, in collaboration with other researchers at the faculty and university. The incumbent will also contribute to the pedagogical development within the subject. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working in accordance with SLU's vision, goals, and values.
  • Contributing to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU.
  • Developing and leading an internationally outstanding research environment.
  • Integrating zooecological research with the application areas of forestry, wildlife management, and forest damage.
  • Publishing scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Applying for external research funding at national and international levels.
  • Supervising doctoral students and mentoring postdoctoral researchers.
  • Developing, leading, and participating in teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
  • Collaborating with researchers within the department, faculty, other parts of SLU, as well as nationally and internationally.
  • Networking and further developing connections with the surrounding society at regional, national, and international levels.
  • Communicating research results.
  • Performing administrative tasks within the department, faculty, and university.

The department has a bilingual work environment. The incumbent will be able to perform most of their duties in English. As a public authority, the university has Swedish as its primary language according to language law requirements. At SLU, non-Swedish-speaking staff are expected to acquire sufficient Swedish skills within four years of employment to access information in Swedish. The department will support the incumbent in achieving this.

Qualifications

The applicant must meet the following qualification requirements:

  • Hold a PhD in a subject relevant to the position or have equivalent scientific competence.
  • Be scientifically skilled in the subject of the position.
  • Be pedagogically skilled.
  • Have demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Have good proficiency in English.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for employment shall primarily concern the degree of skill required for the qualification.

In assessing scientific skill, the following will be considered:

  • Completed research efforts and ongoing research within the subject's focus (plant-animal interactions in temperate and boreal forest ecosystems).
  • Ability to integrate zooecological research with the application areas of forestry, wildlife management, and forest damage.
  • Expertise in wildlife management and forest damage.
  • Future visions for research within the subject.
  • Ability to independently initiate and conduct outstanding research.
  • Ability to secure external research funding competitively.
  • Ability to supervise and examine doctoral students and mentor postdoctoral researchers.

In assessing pedagogical skill, the ability to:

  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate own teaching at all levels.
  • Supervise and examine students at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
  • Communicate and implement one's pedagogical vision.
  • Integrate current research and scientific approaches into pedagogical work.

Furthermore, the following will be considered:

  • Ability to develop and lead operations and personnel within academia.
  • Leadership vision.
  • Collaborative skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with external stakeholders and the surrounding society.
  • Ability to communicate research results and development work.

The position will be offered to the candidate who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is judged to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and developing the current tasks and contributing to a positive development of the operations.
