The Current Doctoral Project

At the Department of Pedagogy and Special Education, University of Gothenburg, there is the national longitudinal infrastructure Evaluation through Follow-up (UGU). The current doctoral position is particularly linked to UGU's activities and the challenges associated with handling, developing, and analyzing longitudinal individual data. UGU is in a dynamic phase where development work regarding missing data, the design and use of weights, and longitudinal analyses is urgent. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to be included in all tasks related to UGU – from questionnaire construction, testing, and collaboration with teachers, to the analysis and presentation of questionnaire data. This means that the current doctoral project may include substantive parts that fall within UGU's framework, such as individual conditions for learning (e.g., motivation, engagement, school-related well-being) as well as analytical parts. An important part involves ensuring methodological approaches to design and analyze longitudinal data in the field of education and advancing how we can methodologically handle the challenges of large dropouts in questionnaire surveys.

Responsibilities

The doctoral student shall engage in doctoral education. In collaboration with supervisors, the doctoral student will formulate and carry out a dissertation part and a course part with mandatory and optional doctoral courses in accordance with both a general and an individual study plan. During the doctoral period, the dissertation work will be presented and discussed in seminar form with an invited discussant on at least three occasions. The doctoral student shall be part of the current research environment at the department. The department encourages and supports the presentation of dissertation work at national and international conferences.

In addition to engaging in doctoral education with the aim of completing it within the specified time, some service (max 20%) may occur within education, research, commissioned work, and administration according to special provisions in the ordinance. The employment is then extended by the corresponding time. The studies shall be conducted within the doctoral education subject of pedagogy.

Qualifications and Requirements

Those admitted to doctoral education receive a four-year doctoral employment at the department. To be admitted to doctoral education, in accordance with what is stated in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 35, the applicant must meet the requirements for basic and specialized eligibility, and be assessed to have such other abilities as needed to benefit from the education.

Basic eligibility is held, according to Chapter 7, Section 39, of the Higher Education Ordinance, by those who have completed an advanced level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level. Eligible is also those who have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.

For specialized eligibility in the subject of pedagogy, 90 credits in the subject of pedagogy are required, of which at least 30 credits are at an advanced level. The eligibility-providing education must include a thesis of at least 15 credits at an advanced level.

Eligibility is also held by those who are assessed to have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.

Admission and Employment

The applicant admitted to doctoral education is employed as a doctoral student. Regulations for employment as a doctoral student can be found in Ordinance SFS 1993:100. The first employment as a doctoral student may last for a maximum of one year and may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years.

Doctoral education at the Department of Pedagogy and Special Education requires physical presence to complete the studies. If the admitted person needs a residence permit to study in Sweden, the department has the right to revoke the admission decision if the admitted person cannot present a valid residence permit on the date of the start of studies.
