About the research project
This PhD position is part of the doctoral education in Resource Recovery and belongs to the research group Resource Management. The project aims to develop and implement an AI-based smart bin to measure both the quantity and type of food waste. Implementation will primarily take place in a school, restaurant, or nursing home in Borås.
Data collected via the smart bin will be used to identify interventions that can reduce food waste. These interventions will be implemented and their results analyzed, contributing to the overarching goal of reducing the environmental impact of food waste.
Your responsibilities
The position involves independent doctoral studies within the framework of the project, comprising both theoretical and experimental work on the development of the AI-based smart bin.
Research activities include the development and implementation of the technology, identification and execution of interventions to reduce food waste, and analysis of results. Research findings are to be disseminated, including through scientific publications.
In addition to doctoral studies, teaching or other institutional duties may be included up to 20% of full-time employment. The total study period will be extended accordingly.

Your qualifications
The appointment is conditional upon meeting the eligibility requirements and being admitted to the doctoral education, a decision made by the Doctoral Education Committee for Resource Recovery.
Admission requires a master's degree or equivalent. You must have documented knowledge in computer programming, computer modeling, or a related field. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
We are looking for someone with good collaborative skills, initiative, and the ability to work independently and systematically, as well as prioritize tasks effectively.
Qualifications that are meritorious:
- Documented experience in advanced programming and/or the use of Generative AI for object detection.
- Experience with computer calculations for studying chemical or physical processes.
- Scientific publications in international, peer-reviewed journals.
Your employment
Employment type: PhD position equivalent to four years of full-time studies, leading to a doctoral degree.
Start date: October 1st or as agreed.

A PhD appointment is initially valid for a maximum of one year and may be renewed for periods of up to two years. Regulations are found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
