For more information about the department, see https://www.gu.se/litteratur-idehistoria-religion (https://www.gu.se/litteratur-idehistoria-religion).

The Department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion is advertising two doctoral positions in Religious Studies with a specialization in Studies in Christianity – History and Contemporary Context. The call is open to relevant projects within all specializations of Religious Studies at the University of Gothenburg: religious history, systematic theology, religious behavioral science, history of Christianity, biblical studies, and religious didactics.

The two doctoral positions are advertised in collaboration between the Diocese of Gothenburg and the Department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion, and are co-financed by the Diocese of Gothenburg. This initiative strengthens competence supply and mutually beneficial cooperation between the university and the diocese. The doctoral students are admitted and employed according to the same procedures and with the same conditions, responsibilities, and rights as other doctoral students at the department.

Religious studies research at the department covers studies of religion's function, changeability, and interpretation in history and the present, as well as analysis of religious practices, texts, and arguments. Religious studies provide insight into historical and contemporary processes, religious encounters, religious conflicts, and text interpretation, as well as theological and ethical positions and debates – competencies that are becoming increasingly relevant for the multi-religious and multicultural society. Job Responsibilities

The goal of the education is a doctoral degree in Religious Studies. Education at the doctoral level consists partly of courses, which are examined over time, and partly of independent research work that should lead to a scientific dissertation. During the education, the doctoral student must communicate scientific results both orally and in writing.

The goal of the doctoral employment is for the doctoral student to develop the knowledge and skills required to independently conduct research within Religious Studies and to contribute to knowledge development within the subject through the production of a scientific dissertation. A doctoral employment in Religious Studies also aims for the doctoral student to develop the ability to apply achieved scientific skills and knowledge in further research work or in other qualified professional work.

The doctoral student must be physically present at the workplace and interact actively in the doctoral education environment, which includes active participation in doctoral and research seminars at the department. The department's working language is Swedish, although some activities may be in English. Admission to the doctoral education requires knowledge of Swedish and English sufficient to complete mandatory course modules and actively participate in seminars and similar activities. If necessary, the university offers introductory courses in Swedish. The dissertation may be written in Swedish or English, or alternatively Norwegian or Danish.

The doctoral student must present their dissertation work annually or at least four times during the education at a seminar arranged by the Diocese of Gothenburg.
