The Department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion is one of the six departments of the Faculty of Humanities and has approximately 100 employees (of which approximately 20 are doctoral students) and approximately 1,000 students. The department is advertising two doctoral positions in Religious Studies. The field encompasses all religious studies research orientations at Gothenburg University: religious history, systematic theology, religious behavioral science, history of Christianity, biblical studies, and religious didactics.

Current research at the department includes studies of the function, changeability, and interpretation of religion in history and the present, as well as analysis of religious practices, texts, and arguments. Religious Studies provides insight into historical and contemporary processes, religious encounters, religious conflicts, and textual interpretation, as well as theological and ethical positions and debates – competencies that are becoming increasingly relevant for the multi-religious and multicultural society. Job Responsibilities

The goal of the education is a PhD in Religious Studies. Education at the doctoral level consists partly of courses, which are examined as they are completed, and partly of independent research work that should lead to a scientific dissertation. During the education, the doctoral student must communicate scientific results both orally and in writing.

The goal of the doctoral employment is for the doctoral student to develop the knowledge and skills required to independently conduct research within Religious Studies and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the subject through the production of a scientific dissertation. A doctoral position in Religious Studies also aims for the doctoral student to develop the ability to apply acquired scientific skills and knowledge in further research work or in other qualified professional work.

The doctoral student must be physically present at the workplace and interact actively in the doctoral education environment, which includes active participation in doctoral and research seminars at the department. The department's working language is Swedish, while some activities may be in English. Admission to the doctoral education requires knowledge of Swedish and English sufficient to complete mandatory course modules and actively participate in seminars and similar activities. If necessary, the university offers introductory courses in Swedish. The dissertation may be written in Swedish or English, or alternatively in Norwegian or Danish.
