Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. There are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 staff members in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.

Description of the activity

The position is located at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology (EIT) and the Division of Integrated Electronic Systems (IES). The research at the division balances a system perspective with a circuit perspective. We design integrated circuits (chips) in advanced nanometer silicon processes (primarily CMOS), such as radio frequency and millimeter-wave circuits, data converters, digital signal processors, as well as larger systems containing both analog and digital functions.

Our team consists of professors, associate professors, researchers, and administrative staff, providing a rich intellectual environment that promotes collaboration. We offer a supportive work environment as a prerequisite for favorable professional development and a balanced work-life balance. New employees have the opportunity to engage in highly relevant research projects, educational initiatives, and industry collaboration, contributing to our overarching mission to promote IC design.

Being a PhD Student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University.

As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in thinking critically and analytically, solving problems independently using appropriate methods, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student, you have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

Subject and Project Description

Through project funding from the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems (Vinnova), we are now offering a new PhD position. The participants in the project are Lund University, Chalmers University of Technology, and Ericsson, and the research will take place in close collaboration between researchers from the universities and the company.

The collaboration with Ericsson concerns system aspects and antennas, and with Chalmers regarding transmitter linearization techniques. This will provide excellent opportunities for both increased visibility and greater impact for the research.

The research area for the position is integrated radio frequency circuits for the transmitter part of wireless devices connected via 6G. The frequency range is 7–12 GHz, which constitutes part of the so-called FR3 band. Integrated circuits and transmitter architectures with high efficiency, output power, and linearity for 6G signals will be studied. The interface to the antennas and their impedance variations will also be taken into account.
