Job Description

Your primary focus will be your doctoral studies, which include participation in research projects, doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences.

The specific tasks include:

• Developing methods for AI-driven protein design.
• Generating design sequences intended for experimental testing.
• Collaborating with a PhD student who is primarily responsible for the experimental testing.
• Conducting some experimental testing if you are interested.
• Participating in project meetings and summarizing results.
• Keeping up to date with developments in the field of protein design.
• Participating in teaching and other departmental duties (maximum 20% of working time).

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a doctoral student, you must meet the following requirements.

Admission Requirements

You meet the general entry requirements for graduate studies if you have:

• Completed an advanced level degree or
• Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level or
• Acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

You meet the specific entry requirements for biochemistry if you have:

• At least 120 higher education credits consisting of chemistry courses, including a basic course in biochemistry or cell biology.
• At least 30 higher education credits in a master's thesis within the chosen specialization or closely related specializations.
• The specific entry requirement may also have been obtained through other equivalent education, which is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

The study plan will be updated on June 12, and this version will be the one studied thereafter.

Other Requirements

To successfully complete the current doctoral program, you also need:

• A Master's degree from a program that provides good preparation for research and application of bioinformatics methods and machine learning on sequences and molecules. This could be a program in bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, molecular biotechnology, computational chemistry, molecular physics, or computer science.
• Strong computational skills with significant experience in Python programming.
• Competence in using AI and machine learning tools within molecular sciences.
• An educational background that includes courses in molecular subjects, including protein structure.
• Good analytical skills (problem-solving), initiative, teamwork ability, and perseverance.
• Specific required skills (please be specific as this makes assessment easier).
• Good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle scientific problems.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Merits

The following are considered advantageous for the current doctoral program:

• Experience with AI-driven protein design is highly advantageous.
• Experience with protein expression and purification is advantageous.
• Experience in developing deep learning models for molecular studies, particularly within protein science, is highly advantageous.

Consideration will also be given to good teamwork skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant is assessed to have the ability required to complete the doctoral program based on their experience and competence.

About the Position

The position is a fixed-term full-time employment, starting 2026-08-01 or by agreement. The doctoral program is four years of full-time study. The employment is extended correspondingly if teaching and other departmental duties are performed. Regulations concerning employment as a doctoral student are found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
