Workplace Description

At the Department of Medical Microbiology, within the Institution of Laboratory Medicine, Professor Marianne Jansson leads a research group focusing on HIV-1 and HIV-2 host interactions. By combining in vitro infection models with in vivo observations and utilizing both molecular and cellular virological methods, the research group aims to understand the pathogenic properties of HIV-1 and HIV-2, with the goal of identifying new targets that can be exploited for preventive or therapeutic measures. You can read more about the research on our website. We are now seeking a driven and experienced Assistant Researcher in Medical Microbiology to support the various research projects.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The tasks include:

  • Independently conducting research projects focusing on HIV, under the supervision of the project leader. This involves designing and carrying out experimental research, analyzing and compiling acquired results, and reporting research findings in the form of scientific publications and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Theoretical and practical supervision of staff, including Swedish and international students and postdocs. This involves introducing and supervising experimental HIV research in a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory.
  • Maintaining and updating risk assessments and handling instructions related to the current experimental activities together with the project leader.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • A PhD in Medical Microbiology.
  • Experience with experimental HIV research in a BSL-3 laboratory, including cell and molecular biology.
  • Good knowledge of safety regulations for working with human pathogens in BSL-3, implying the ability to understand and apply regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in introducing and supervising staff in experimental HIV research.
  • Experience in designing viral quantitative assays, as well as sequencing technology and gene-editing tools, such as CRISPR-Cas.
  • Experience with microarray analysis, as well as single-cell sequencing (Rhapsody).
  • Good knowledge of statistical, bioinformatic (R packages), and phylogenetic tools.
  • Experience in independent project leadership.
  • Excellent written communication skills in Swedish and English, with the ability to analyze and compile scientific data in the form of publications and grant applications.
  • Emphasis will also be placed on personal skills and suitability. The tasks require you to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively with other members of the research group and its partners.

Other Information

The employment is a fixed-term position according to SÄVA for 3 months, full-time, with a desired start date of August 1, 2026, or as agreed.
