Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of human life.
As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
Subject and Project Description
Computational science is research that develops and applies advanced computational methods to solve research problems. A doctoral project is interdisciplinary in the sense that both the scientific questions within the application and the computational aspects constitute a significant part of the thesis. This doctoral project involves the methodological development of probabilistic elicitation of expert judgments (expert elicitation) that supports Bayesian calibration of assessment models and characterization of uncertainty in conclusions, with applications to environmental and human risk assessments. The doctoral student will participate in a research project that develops and tests protocols for probabilistic elicitation of expert knowledge in panel-based assessments.

Responsibilities
Your primary responsibility will be your doctoral studies, which largely consist of writing a doctoral thesis.
Qualifications
To be admitted and employed as a doctoral student, you must meet the requirements below.
Eligibility
You meet the basic eligibility for doctoral studies if you have:
- completed an advanced level degree or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
You meet the specific eligibility for computational science if you have:
- completed course requirements within a natural science or engineering field of at least 60 higher education credits at basic or advanced level
- completed course requirements of at least 30 higher education credits in mathematics (advanced or basic level) and at least 7.5 higher education credits in programming
- completed an independent project (e.g., thesis) in a relevant subject comprising at least 30 higher education credits
Other Requirements
To benefit from the current doctoral studies, the following are also required:
- knowledge of probability theory, statistical modeling, and Bayesian inference (e.g., demonstrated by having completed at least one advanced level course)
- experience in programming and data analysis
- strong ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle scientific problems
- good ability in written and oral communication
- good teamwork skills
- very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
Selection Criteria
The selection among eligible applicants will be based on the ability to benefit from the education according to the following criteria:
- knowledge of eliciting expert judgments, integrating expert knowledge into Bayesian modeling, decision analysis, and probabilistic uncertainty analysis
- knowledge of R or Python
- experience in risk assessment, systematic reviews, and/or evidence syntheses; where applications within the environment (ecological or human effects) are particularly meritorious
- good numerical ability and initiative
- an original and personal proposal for a research problem to be carried out within the framework of the doctoral project that shows an interest in the research area
What We Offer
Lund University is a government agency, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation time, and a favorable occupational pension.
About the Position
The employment is a fixed-term full-time position, starting 2026-09-01 or as soon as possible thereafter. The doctoral education is four years for full-time studies. Regulations concerning employment as a doctoral student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
Other Information
Candidates will be invited to an interview, which may be conducted in person or via a link.
How to Apply
The application should be written in English and you should attach the following to your application:
- CV and cover letter explaining why you are interested in the study place/position and how the research project matches your interests and educational background.
- Include a proposal of max 1 page describing a research problem you wish to address within the doctoral project.
- Copies of issued study certificates and/or degree certificates. These should verify your basic and specific eligibility for the doctoral subject and show that you have the subject knowledge required for the doctoral project.
- Contact information for two to three references; actual recommendation letters are not required at this stage.
We look forward to receiving your application!
Research and education are conducted at the Faculty of Science within astronomy, biology, physics, earth sciences, chemistry, mathematics, medical radiation physics, environmental science, and physical geography. The operations are carried out in the northern university area. The faculty has approximately 1,900 students, 330 doctoral students, and 730 employees.
We decline all contact from advertising sales, recruitment, and staffing agencies due to public procurement regulations.
