The research project TAPAS (TActical Prehospital Acute Care in Strife-adjacent care environments) aims to strengthen tactical care within prehospital emergency care in threatening, insecure, and strife-adjacent care environments. The University of Borås is now seeking a doctoral student for the DISASTER-CARE doctoral school within the subject of nursing science, focusing on prehospital emergency care in threatening and insecure environments.
Apply by July 31st at the latest.
Research Background
Sweden's ability to handle disasters is affected by the current security situation. The rapidly changing security situation means that healthcare personnel in prehospital emergency care need to strengthen their ability to work in threatening, insecure, and strife-adjacent care environments during war.
Under normal conditions, prehospital emergency care is provided in complex, unpredictable, and sometimes directly threatening care environments where healthcare personnel are forced to make critical decisions under time pressure, uncertainty, and in some cases, danger to life. Prehospital emergency care in war differs from that provided under normal circumstances. The care environment can often be extreme, unpredictable, and life-threatening for healthcare personnel. The injured persons may have very serious injuries, and emergency care is characterized by high patient volumes and a significant resource shortage. The emergency care provided to those who fall ill or are injured may also need to be provided for longer than desirable. This may be due to delays in transport to further hospital care or the inability to carry it out due to weather, terrain, ongoing fighting, or the availability of medical transport being insufficient for the care needs.
Healthcare personnel in prehospital emergency care are expected to be able to care for those who fall ill or are injured in war even when resources are insufficient and the burden is so high that normal quality requirements cannot be maintained despite adequate efforts. Therefore, it is crucial that healthcare personnel can provide care that is necessary for life and health. At the same time, healthcare personnel must constantly weigh the patient's care needs against which care actions are possible, appropriate, and sufficiently safe to perform based on the current threat level where the care is taking place. For this reason, tactical care becomes significant to protect both patients and healthcare personnel in threatening, insecure, and strife-adjacent care environments where security can deteriorate quickly. The overall purpose of the thesis is therefore to investigate and develop knowledge about how tactical care within prehospital emergency care in threatening, insecure, and strife-adjacent care environments can be strengthened.
The DISASTER-CARE Doctoral School
As a doctoral student, you will be part of the national doctoral school DISASTER-CARE. It is Sweden's first national doctoral school in disaster medicine – an area that is gaining increasing importance in today's society, characterized by global crises and a changed international security situation. The initiative is funded by the Swedish Research Council and is based on a government mandate. The doctoral school is coordinated by the University of Gothenburg and is carried out in close cooperation between some of Sweden's leading higher education institutions in disaster medicine. It is aimed at you who, after completing the education, will work as a teacher in health and care education with a focus on disaster medicine and crisis preparedness.
As a doctoral student in DISASTER-CARE, you will become part of an interdisciplinary research environment where medicine, nursing science, technology, and social sciences meet. You will have access to a strong national context with doctoral students and teachers from all over the country, as well as international opportunities through collaborations, guest lectures, and participation in conferences and research environments.

The Doctoral Education "The Human in Care"
The doctoral student will be admitted to the Doctoral Education within the research area "The Human in Care," which is conducted within the subject of nursing science. The area is anchored in nursing science with a focus on prehospital emergency care in threatening and insecure environments. The focus is on healthcare personnel and on how cognitive, organizational, and interprofessional factors affect decision-making, communication, and care in situations such as ongoing lethal violence. The knowledge ultimately aims to strengthen the conditions for safe and patient-centered care.
