Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 staff members in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of human life.

Research and education at the Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences (MGeo) address fundamental and applied questions regarding Earth's past, present, and future climate and environment, including human interaction with nature and its consequences for human well-being. MGeo develops and applies pioneering methods, models, and techniques within environmental science, Quaternary and bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, geographic information science (GIS), and computational science within environmental and health to study processes ranging from the microscopic to the planetary, across all timescales.

Being a PhD Student

As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by LU (100%).

Subject and Project Description

We are looking for a motivated and driven doctoral student to improve the modeling and forecasting of greenhouse gas emissions from European cities to support their efforts to reduce emissions.

The main goal of this project is to further develop, evaluate, and apply the existing and widely used "flux footprint" model FFP (Kljun et al. 2015) in urban landscapes.

Responsibilities

Your primary focus will be your doctoral studies, which largely consist of writing a doctoral thesis. Additionally, you are expected to:

  • Conduct research within the subject area
  • Publish results in high-quality journals
  • Participate in project meetings at LU and LiU, including research visits to LiU
  • Actively contribute to the collaborative environment within ELLIIT
  • Present results at national and international conferences

In addition to studies, a maximum of 20% of working time may be devoted to teaching and other departmental duties.

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a doctoral student, you must meet the requirements below.

Admission Requirements

You meet the basic admission requirements for graduate studies if you have:

  • completed an advanced level degree or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level or
  • acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

A person meets the specific admission requirements for doctoral education in environmental science if the applicant has completed an independent work (e.g., thesis) in a relevant subject comprising at least 30 higher education credits.

The specific admission requirement may also have been obtained through other equivalent education, which is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Other qualifications than the applicant's subject-specific competence in environmental science can be considered.

Other Requirements

The following are also required:

  • A university degree (MSc or equivalent) in a natural science or engineering subject, more specifically computational science, physics, atmospheric science, or similar
  • Excellent numerical and analytical problem-solving skills and experience with programming languages (Matlab, Python, Fortran) and geoscientific tools (e.g., ArcGIS)
  • Excellent knowledge of the atmosphere, including atmospheric fluid dynamics, atmospheric boundary layer meteorology, and modeling of relevant processes (e.g., dispersion modeling)
  • Very good knowledge of oral and written English, very good communication skills

Merits

  • Competence in mathematical statistics, quantitative modeling, and machine learning methods
  • Interdisciplinary and environmental science study background, e.g., knowledge of the causes and impacts of climate change

Selection Criteria

The selection among qualified applicants will be made with regard to the ability to benefit from the education based on the following criteria:

  • knowledge that is meritorious (see requirements above)
  • Documented ability to handle complex research problems and to work in a team as well as independently, and to complete activities on time
  • Consideration will also be given to good teamwork skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the abilities required to successfully complete the doctoral education.

About the Employment

The employment is a fixed-term full-time position, starting August 5, 2026, or as agreed. The doctoral education is four years of full-time studies. In the event of teaching and other departmental duties, the employment is extended accordingly. Regulations concerning employment as a doctoral student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

How to Apply

The application should be written in English and you should attach the following to your application:

  • CV
  • Cover letter (2 pages) explaining why you are interested in the study position/employment and how the research project matches your interests and educational background.
  • Copies of issued study certificates and/or degree certificates. These should verify your basic and specific eligibility for the doctoral program and show that you have the subject knowledge required for the doctoral project.
  • Other information (copies of grades, reference contact details, recommendation letters, etc.).

We look forward to receiving your application!
