Legal Secretariat, Ministry of Defence

Are you a skilled lawyer looking to work on legal issues at the center of defense and security policy development? We offer a challenging and meaningful job where you contribute to the development of Sweden's military and civil defense. With us, you will have varied, interesting, and complex tasks that require your ability to combine legal expertise with an understanding of the whole you operate in. We are now looking for several legal experts or qualified lawyers for the Legal Secretariat.

Your workday. Sweden's tomorrow.

Your tasks may include legal issues within the entire scope of the ministry's responsibilities. This includes legislative work, such as drafting memoranda, council bills, propositions, and legislative texts, as well as participating in public inquiries. The work also involves assisting the head of the department and the legal director in legal matters, providing information and advice in legal matters to the political leadership and other parts of the ministry. In addition to Swedish national law, the Legal Secretariat works with international law issues, primarily with international humanitarian law, as well as EU law. The Legal Secretariat also participates in the ministry's work on negotiating international agreements and other collaborations with other states and organizations. Sweden's membership in the NATO defense alliance means an increased focus on these issues.

The Legal Secretariat currently consists of just over 30 employees. The Legal Secretariat is responsible for, among other things, drafting proposals for council bills, propositions, and other legislative work, as well as issues related to legislative preparedness, international law, international humanitarian law, matters concerning the disclosure of public documents, and coordination of divisions from other ministries. The Secretariat provides legal advice to the ministry's management and to other units and participates in the work of other units on international agreements.
