Duty Officer at the Swedish Prison and Probation Service in Umeå
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transportation.
The Umeå area includes the closed prison Umeå, the open prison Sörbyn, and the detention center Umeå. We are undergoing significant capacity increases, and there is a lot happening in the area in terms of renovations and new constructions. The largest professional group is prison officers, but there are also healthcare professionals, administrative staff, educators, production leaders, etc. At the Sörbyn prison, inmates are engaged in labor market training, learning centers, various treatment programs, or work in the kitchen, carpentry, plant cultivation, textiles, etc. Sörbyn is an agricultural prison with grain cultivation and animal husbandry. At Umeå prison, inmates are engaged in wood/industry, kitchen, learning centers, and treatment programs. The Umeå prison and detention center are about a 10-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, and Sörbyn prison is only accessible by car. Staff parking is available at all units.
We are looking for two duty officers for Umeå – one for round-the-clock operations at the prison and one for day and evening shifts at the detention center. Do you want to take on significant responsibility and make a difference? Apply now!
RESPONSIBILITIES
As a duty officer, you will be responsible for security at the Umeå prison/detention center in consultation with the prison inspector and will operationally lead and distribute daily tasks. You will follow up on daily security work and take necessary actions as needed. We are now seeking two duty officers: one for the prison, which involves round-the-clock operations, and one for the detention center, which is active during the day and evening, Monday to Sunday. The duty officer is the highest operational decision-maker locally outside office hours under the prison manager on standby. You represent the employer and ensure that the management line is maintained throughout to all staff, anchoring decisions made and providing support to the prison inspector. Decision-making is done according to the regulations of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.
As a duty officer, you will also participate in admissions and discharges and ensure that security procedures are followed. Furthermore, you will conduct security talks and assessments, plan transports, and make daily assessments of staffing needs and short-term personnel ranking in the work. In the role of duty officer, you need to be prepared to assist where the operation has a need for the day.
