Postdoctoral Researcher in Public Health Science

The Department of Public Health Sciences is a department within the Faculty of Social Sciences with approximately 70 employees.

We offer an interdisciplinary and internationally renowned research environment. The department hosts two centers: the Center for Research on Health Inequalities (CHESS) and the Center for Social Science Research on Alcohol and Drugs (SoRAD). We also provide education in public health science at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/enheter/institutionen-for-folkhalsovetenskap (https://www.su.se/enheter/institutionen-for-folkhalsovetenskap).

Project Description

The project is based on the premise that social position affects health, but that health can also influence social position. It aims to create a deeper understanding of the processes that lead to social inequalities in health through longitudinal analyses of the interplay between work-life factors and health. The data material consists of the Labor Force Survey (AKU) and registers of the population's composition, socioeconomic conditions, and health from Statistics Sweden (SCB), the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, and the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities include data management and linking survey data with register material, designing and conducting advanced longitudinal statistical analyses, and writing scientific articles in collaboration with researchers within and outside the Department of Public Health Sciences. Work on other ongoing research projects at the department will also be included. Participation in project meetings and presentations of research results both within and outside the Department of Public Health Sciences is also part of the job responsibilities.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the position of postdoctoral researcher, a PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants should have a PhD in public health science or a related field. It is advantageous if the PhD or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, a previously obtained degree may also be considered meritorious. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, elected positions within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical service or relevant assignments in the subject area.

Particular emphasis will be placed on scientific competence and productivity within the overall subject of the project, documented skills in advanced statistical methods, documented experience in combining survey and register data, experience working independently with Swedish register data, and relevant subject-specific knowledge.

Great importance will be placed on communication and collaboration skills as well as personal suitability.

Good language skills in English, both spoken and written, are required, as well as some understanding of Swedish.

The position requires a good ability to collaborate, effectively organize work, perform tasks independently, and communicate complex statistical issues.

About the Position

The position is full-time and is permanent, but for at least two years and at most three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date is 2026-04-01 or by agreement.
