Research Opportunity in Healthcare Needs and Logistics
The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analysis. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.
Are you looking for a meaningful occupation where you as a researcher can contribute to critical societal functions? Are you looking for a place where your models and calculations can help save lives? If so, FOI may be your next employer!
About the Position
The Total Defence Research Institute collaborates with defense, preparedness, and healthcare authorities to ensure that Sweden's healthcare system is robust in the event of a crisis or war. This includes forecasting expected types of injuries from mass casualty events, estimating the resulting healthcare needs, and sizing the healthcare resources and logistics chain needed to meet this demand.
The purpose of this position is to become part of the team that conducts research, modeling, and calculations for this critical societal work on behalf of all of Sweden.
As a researcher in healthcare needs and logistics, you will work with other driven researchers in the field to develop models, forecasts, and calculations for this purpose. Input to these models is data on casualties primarily from mass casualty events caused by, for example, missile attacks, and output is the burden on the Swedish healthcare system – both in terms of individual casualties and aggregated load on the entire system. You will model the system response and how the system can be designed to meet the extraordinary pressure that crises and wars can place on healthcare. The work also includes gathering and processing data needed to create and validate these models. The exact content of the position is expected to be adapted to the profile of the selected candidate(s).
About the Unit
You will be part of the Population Protection unit, which belongs to the Defense Analysis department. Population Protection is a growth unit focused on civil defense and particularly the protection of the civilian population. Please read more about what we do on FOI's website: Defense Analysis.

The ability to analyze incomplete, aggregated, or qualitative data and to create simplified models based on such data is crucial for success in this position. We also expect you to be self-driven and take responsibility for your work, conducting it in a structured manner to deliver requested results on time. Furthermore, we see that you have good communication skills that enable you to describe complex ideas and problems clearly and pedagogically. We place great importance on personal qualities.
