System Developer with a focus on AI and Language Technology

The Department for Support and Development at the Institute for Language and Folklore (Isof) is now looking for a system developer with a focus on AI and language technology to investigate and apply AI-based methods to increase accessibility in Isof's collections.

About Isof

Isof is a government agency that collects, builds, and disseminates knowledge about language and culture in our multilingual Sweden. We exist for everyone and are a resource for many professional groups, associations, and organizations. We assist the government with data and provide support to other authorities.

About the Work

The main tasks are to investigate and apply AI-based methods to increase accessibility in Isof's collections. The work has an operational focus, and the goal is to develop functional technical solutions or prototype solutions.

The work includes installation, configuration, and operation of local AI infrastructure, including server environments for running language models and other language technology components. The work involves using machine learning techniques and large language models (LLM) for analysis, indexing, and description of materials, as well as testing semantic search or vector search for improved access.

The work is iterative, collaborating with the project group in recurring steps, where prototypes are developed, workflows are created, and results are evaluated. The work also includes documenting solutions and results in a structured and pedagogical manner, as well as contributing to the dissemination of the project's results, for example through presentations or webinars. The work is carried out in close cooperation with employees from different departments within Isof and, if necessary, with external partners.

In this Job, You Should

• Have a master's degree or be a master's level student in a relevant interdisciplinary subject as assessed by the agency, e.g., digital humanities, language technology, AI, and language.
• Have documented experience in programming.
• Have good knowledge of programming and working in Linux-based environments.
• Have very good knowledge and documented experience in applied NLP/AI, including practical work with language models (LLM).
• Have a good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish.

It is Meritorious if You Have

• Experience working with vector models and evaluating search and analysis results.
• Experience working with open-source solutions and running language models locally.
• Familiarity with and experience working with language or cultural heritage collections.
• Basic knowledge and experience working with user interfaces, frontend development, and basic UX principles.

Work location is Stockholm or Uppsala by agreement.

Start date is by agreement. The employment is temporary until December 31, 2026, at most. Working hours 50–100 percent by agreement.
