Researcher for the project "Beyond Tradition" funded by the Swedish Research Council
This advertisement is aimed at those who are covered by a labor market policy measure.
The Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology conducts education and research on many of the complex contexts that characterize today’s globalized world. The department currently has 47 employees and an annual turnover of approximately 50 million SEK. The activities consist largely of research. The department offers teaching at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels in ethnology and cultural anthropology to about 700 students annually.
We are now seeking a research assistant for the project "Beyond Tradition: An Exploration of Contributing Factors Behind Men's Violence Against Women in the Home Environment Among Afro-Swedish Families"
Our research examines men's violence against women within Afro-Swedish families, a research area that has so far been neglected. We want to understand how views on gender equality, changing family structures, and traditional gender roles affect vulnerability to domestic violence.
It is also central to investigate how Afro-Swedish men perceive women's increased power in society, and how it affects their identity, their relationships, and perhaps even the risk of violence. Finally, it is important to see how conflicts between different generations in the family can increase the danger of violence. Men's violence against women is a serious societal problem, and it does not affect everyone equally. By focusing on Afro-Swedish families, we can gain a deeper understanding of the specific challenges they face and contribute to more tailored solutions for the target group. We will use research methods where Afro-Swedish groups are actively engaged. This involves in-depth interviews and focus groups, where we together with Afro-Swedish individuals and organizations identify problems and possible solutions to men's violence against women in the home. In addition, we will create meeting places – community dialogues – where researchers, organizations, authorities, and members from Afro-Swedish organizations can meet to discuss how we can collaborate to prevent domestic violence. We will also utilize knowledge of feminist and socio-ecological perspectives on how individuals are affected by their environment. It is our hope that this research will lead to concrete improvements and more effective interventions that are tailored to the needs of Afro-Swedish families. By collaborating with authorities, Afro-Swedish organizations, and municipalities, we hope to create more action-oriented knowledge about domestic violence and contribute to a more equal and just society.
Job Responsibilities
Data collection, management, and analysis of research data including conducting and transcribing in-depth interviews. Support in planning and implementing activities within the project. Other common tasks at the department may occur.
Qualifications
PhD in gender studies or equivalent.
Experience in participating in research projects using qualitative methods and processing qualitative data.
Due to the nature of the project, personal qualities will be an important part of the selection process. We prefer that the candidate is meticulous and has the ability to systematically work with complex qualitative data. The candidate needs to be attentive, respectful, and professional in contact with participants and collaborators, as well as have a good ability to express themselves verbally and in writing. Ability to handle varying tasks and changing conditions. High sense of responsibility in handling sensitive material.
