Adjunct Judge at Svea Court of Appeal

Sveriges Domstolar

20 days left
to apply for the job

Every day, hundreds of cases and matters are decided in the courts across Sweden. Our organization consists of employees with various competencies, each of whom is significant in maintaining legal certainty and high quality at all levels.

To ensure an inclusive and fair recruitment process, the Swedish Courts apply competency-based recruitment. Our selection is based on candidates' competencies and merits. We kindly but firmly request no direct contact with staffing and recruitment companies or sellers of additional job advertisements.

Working as an adjunct judge is an opportunity for judicial qualification for qualified and experienced lawyers.

As an adjunct judge, you will have the opportunity to work as a judge through practical work supported by experienced colleagues and tailored training. You will start with six months at the Svea Court of Appeal and then continue for six months at one of the district courts within the jurisdiction. The time in both instances can be extended by an additional three months if needed. The specific district court available for service will be discussed with the applicant.

In the Court of Appeal, you will participate in the collegial adjudication activities in negotiations and presentations in a general department. In the district court, it will be more about independent decision-making, and you will also independently lead negotiations. In both instances, you will write judgments and decisions.

This is now a question of one or more positions.

We are looking for someone who

  • has a law degree and approximately ten years of experience in qualified legal work within the areas of law that occur in general courts, e.g., through work as a prosecutor, lawyer, professor, or associate professor in a legal subject,
  • is a lawyer with very good judgment and excellent analytical skills and the ability to express yourself in speech and writing,
  • is accustomed to independent decision-making and has the ability to make decisions within a reasonable time and with high quality,
  • is interested in applying for a position as a regular judge.

Completed clerkship with good references may be an advantage. According to the basic requirements for judges, an adjunct judge must be a Swedish citizen. We place great importance on personal qualities. To be considered for employment, you must meet high standards regarding judgment, security awareness, and suitability. This means that you stand up for democratic values and the state values that govern the operations of the Swedish Courts. We require compliance with applicable laws. In accordance with the Court of Appeal's employment procedures and suitability requirements, the Court of Appeal will conduct background checks prior to any potential employment.

About us

The Svea Court of Appeal is the largest court of appeal in the country with approximately 460 employees. The court's premises are beautifully located on Riddarholmen in central Stockholm. Organizationally, the Court of Appeal currently consists of nine adjudicating departments and one administrative unit.

Seven of the departments are general departments (criminal and civil cases), while two of the departments are specialized (environmental, planning and construction law, and property law as well as intellectual property, marketing, and competition law, covering civil cases, arbitration law, and tenancy law).

The two specialized departments house the special courts, the Patent and Market Court of Appeal (Department 2) and the Land and Environmental Court of Appeal (Department 6).
