Technical Coordinator at UPPMAX

The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in both research and education at all levels.

We are currently Uppsala University's third largest department with over 350 employees, including 120 teachers and 120 PhD students. Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science (https://www.uu.se/centrum/uppmax/) (UPPMAX) is a center that is part of the Department of Information Technology, tasked with providing large-scale computing and storage resources for researchers at Uppsala University and supporting them. The SciLifeLab Data Centre is a national unit within SciLifeLab responsible for IT and data management issues for SciLifeLab and for the research program Data Driven Life Science (DDLS).

UPPMAX is a Tier 2 HPC infrastructure, focusing on local and regional users. UPPMAX also participates as a branch in the national e-infrastructure NAISS (National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden). Currently, UPPMAX has about 1500 active users from many application areas where large-scale computations and storage of large datasets are needed, such as bioinformatics and materials science, but increasingly also from digital humanities and social sciences. A significant part of UPPMAX's activities supports research areas with large-scale needs for HPC infrastructure for handling sensitive data. To ensure that researchers are provided with the best conditions, continuous development and expansion of advanced HPC infrastructure is required. UPPMAX currently has a system expert group of eleven experienced system experts and is looking for the right person to coordinate and lead this work.

About the Position

As a technical coordinator, you will work on the management and coordination of the operation and development of UPPMAX HPC infrastructure, lead technical collaboration projects between UPPMAX and SciLifeLab, and assist with expertise in SciLifeLab's national work with e-infrastructure in line with other tasks. The division will be 75/25 between UPPMAX and SciLifeLab Data Centre.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities will include, among other things:

  • Leading and making decisions on technical measures regarding UPPMAX system operation and development.
  • Coordinating UPPMAX HPC infrastructure regarding needs for computer rooms, electricity, cooling, etc.
  • Acting as a system owner in information security contexts.
  • Responsible for procurement of future HPC infrastructure to meet the needs of UU researchers for large-scale storage and HPC resources.
  • Leading technical collaboration projects with SciLifeLab.
  • Assisting with expertise in SciLifeLab's national work with e-infrastructure in line with other tasks.
  • Leading security work according to applicable Swedish and European legislation.

Qualifications

The person we are looking for should have a PhD in a technical/scientific field with experience in the relevant area for the advertised position, or have long-term professional experience in the relevant area for the advertised position, possess good social skills, good collaboration ability, initiative-taking ability, and good knowledge of Swedish. Additionally, the person must have professional proficiency in English in both spoken and written forms. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

The candidate should have documented experience in:

  • Linux administration on large-scale systems,
  • work on hardware architecture of modern CPU and GPU-based platforms and large-scale storage solutions,
  • network configuration,
  • work with configuration or build tools,
  • work with container technologies, such as Kubernetes, Docker, and Helm,
  • leading others in technical or scientific work.

Desirable/Additional Qualifications

It is considered strongly meritorious if the candidate has documented experience in:

  • reading and writing code in Python, Perl, C, C++, Go, and Java,
  • research on HPC infrastructures with own code,
  • providing user support,
  • project management,
  • IT security work,
  • storage solutions for sensitive data,
  • working within academic-related activities,
  • participating in or supporting decision-making bodies within academia, or alternatively in private industry/associations regarding e-infrastructure issues,
  • conducting procurements and acquisitions.

Other relevant technical or scientific competencies may also be meritorious.

About the Employment

The employment is permanent. A 6-month probationary period may apply. The position is full-time. Start date according to agreement. Place of employment: Uppsala.
