Research Infrastructure Specialist

The Department of Linguistics and Philology conducts research and education in linguistics and text studies with a focus on the languages and cultures of Asia, the classical languages of Europe, linguistics, and computational linguistics.

Education is offered at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The department has about seventy employees who, together with students and partners, create an international and intellectually vibrant environment.

The Department of Linguistics and Philology is seeking a research infrastructure specialist. The position is linked to the Language Bank CLARIN (SBC). SBC is a division within the national research infrastructure Language Bank, focusing on language-based e-science that creates conditions for broad research efforts. The aim is to promote new research with digital tools, and the activities primarily target researchers in the humanities and social sciences working with text, speech, or sign language-based materials. The Language Bank is a consortium of ten universities and cultural heritage institutions, funded by the Swedish Research Council and the participating parties. SBC is led by Uppsala University.

Job Responsibilities

We are looking for a person who can work with corpora and morphosyntactic annotation, primarily for Swedish, both modern and historical, as well as with tools for language processing and research support. The tasks mainly consist of computational linguistic support for research in the humanities and social sciences. The position includes building and annotating corpora, primarily for older and modern Swedish, as well as developing tools for analyzing language. The work will mainly involve tasks such as annotation, evaluation, and development of language technology tools, as well as documentation of resources and tools. Teaching in the master's program in language technology of up to 20% is also included in the position. Additionally, administrative tasks may arise.

Qualifications

  • PhD in computational linguistics or another subject with a computational linguistic profile, or equivalent scientific competence. The degree must be obtained by the time of the hiring decision. If the degree certificate is missing at the time of application, a statement from the supervisor must be attached indicating the date of the defense.
  • Competence in developing computer programs for processing linguistic data
  • Experience in annotating linguistic data
  • Experience in research collaborations with researchers in the humanities or social sciences beyond computational linguistics/linguistics
  • Experience in teaching language technology and supervising master's theses in language technology
  • Good oral and written skills in Swedish and English

Desirable/meritorious

  • Experience in computational linguistic work with historical Swedish
  • Experience using large language models for language analysis
  • Proficiency in Swedish at a native level

To succeed in the job, you should have a structured working method, be flexible and proactive. The tasks require you to be creative while also being solution-focused and analytical.
