Assistant Professor in Experimental Neuro-oncology
The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby foster closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted in cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, as well as vascular biology. Parts of the operations are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several program educations, independent courses, and international master's programs within the medical faculty and the technical-nature sciences area. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is about 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are over 700 active in the workforce. Area Description
Experimental neuro-oncology encompasses fundamental and translational studies of cancer in the central and peripheral nervous system. The goal is to clarify fundamental disease mechanisms, identify therapeutic targets, develop and preclinically test new therapies, and identify and develop strategies for treatment resistance to new and already established treatments. The studies are conducted in relevant and validated disease models such as patient material, patient-derived cell and mouse models, and syngeneic mouse models, and include tissue, cell, molecular, and computational analyses.
Job Responsibilities
The position includes teaching, research, and administration. The holder of the position needs to be well acquainted with the international research developments in experimental neuro-oncology. Job responsibilities also include supervising doctoral students in their research projects and teaching and developing courses and education at the undergraduate level within the department. Administrative tasks and internal and external trust assignments may arise. The position is intended to lead to the development of an independent, successful research profile in brain tumor research focusing on tumor evolution and treatment resistance, and the use of innovative techniques in functional genomics such as CRISPR screens, single-cell sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis.
Employment Period
An appointment as an assistant professor is a six-year qualifying position. However, if there are special reasons, the appointment may be renewed for a maximum of two years. An assistant professor can apply for and be considered for promotion. A written application for consideration for promotion to associate professor must be submitted to the area board for medicine and pharmacy no later than six months before the appointment as assistant professor ends. If the assistant professor is deemed suitable and meets the requirements for promotion, he or she will be promoted and permanently employed as an associate professor.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible for appointment as an assistant professor is according to Chapter 4, § 4a of the Higher Education Ordinance, the one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application deadline should be considered. According to § 5 of the Employment Ordinance for Uppsala University (AO), the general eligibility requirement for teachers is to possess the personal qualities required to perform the position well.
For appointment as an assistant professor, scientific proficiency is required according to § 20 AO. The scientific proficiency must be of good quality and provide good prospects for an academic career in the subject area relevant to the position. (38 § AO).
