PhD Position in Theoretical Physics
Do you want to work on mathematical aspects of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory and string theory or integrable gauge theories at finite temperature, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a PhD position in theoretical physics at Uppsala University.
The PhD positions are available at the Department of Theoretical Physics, one of ten departments within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University. Our department offers a world-class research environment in quantum field theory, gravitation, string theory, and related areas of mathematical physics. The department currently consists of about 40 employees. The positions are part of projects funded by the European Research Council, focusing on scattering amplitudes or integrable gauge theories. More information can be found on the group's website: link (https://www.uu.se/en/department/physics-and-astronomy/research/theoretical-physics).
The PhD position lasts for four years according to a central agreement. The start date is September 1, 2026, or by agreement.
Job Responsibilities
The department plans to recruit two or more ambitious PhD students in theoretical physics. The main task will be research on integrable gauge theories at finite temperature, or on the mathematical aspects of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory and string theory. Other tasks related to teaching and administration at the department are included in the positions (maximum 20%).
Further information about the doctoral education at Uppsala University can be found on the department's website: link (http://www.physics.uu.se).
Qualifications
Eligible for doctoral education is someone who has:
- completed a master's degree in physics or mathematics.
- completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.
The application must include a motivation letter (maximum one page) summarizing the applicant's qualifications, academic experiences, and research interests. We particularly appreciate if the applicant indicates their preference for research in one of the following two directions:
- integrable gauge theories at finite temperature,
- mathematical structures of scattering amplitudes, focusing on string theory and Feynman integrals.
The application should also include a CV, copies of university transcripts, completed theses or manuscripts, and other relevant publications.
Other Qualifications
We plan to recruit a meticulous person with a strong academic background who works well in a research group. Special emphasis will be placed on previous research experience in quantum field theory, string theory, particle physics, number theory, or algebraic geometry.
Regulations for PhD Students
Regulations for PhD students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7 and at link (https://regler.uu.se/?languageId=3).
