Description

Do you want to pursue a doctoral education with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employee development and offers safe, favorable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a PhD position at Uppsala University.

In collaboration between the Department of Modern Languages and the Institute for Russia and Eurasian Studies (IRES), a PhD position is now open with a focus on culture, history, and society within the post-Soviet area.

The Department of Modern Languages is part of the Faculty of Languages and has approximately 65 employees who primarily conduct research and teaching in a wide range of languages within both linguistics and literary studies. The Institute for Russia and Eurasian Studies is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. About 25 people work at the institute, along with several guest researchers and guest PhD students affiliated with the institute. Russia and Eurasian Studies has been an established academic discipline at Uppsala University for nearly fifty years and has a well-recognized, integrated multidisciplinary long-term research program with a deep focus on the latest developments in Russia and the broader post-Soviet sphere. You can find the research areas of the institutions here and here. You can also find the researchers' profiles here; note that although the researchers specialize in certain areas, they are qualified to supervise PhD students in related fields as well.

Responsibilities

The doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies. The position is based at IRES with admission as a PhD student in Slavic Languages at the Department of Modern Languages. Institutional duties, such as teaching, may (by agreement) be included in the work up to 20 percent of full-time. The PhD student is expected to participate in and contribute to the activities of the institutions.

Qualifications

The basic eligibility for doctoral education is met by those who:

  • have obtained a master's degree, or
  • completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
  • have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Eligible for admission to doctoral education in Slavic Languages is someone who, in addition to the basic eligibility, also has special eligibility. The special eligibility is regulated in the general study plan for doctoral education in Slavic Languages at Uppsala University:

"For special eligibility, the applicant must meet the requirements for a master's degree in Slavic Languages, or equivalent. In addition, good reading proficiency in English and in the languages relevant to the international research that is essential for the research task in question is required. Special eligibility is also granted to those who have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way, either within or outside the country."

Documented advanced knowledge in a language relevant to the dissertation project from the post-Soviet area is a must.

Assessment Criteria

The admission to doctoral education is prepared by a working group consisting of representatives from both institutions. The assessment is based on the applicants' ability to benefit from doctoral education. Special emphasis is placed on the quality of the applicants' independent works, previous study results, and the dissertation plan. The working group's assessment also takes into account the institution's ability to supervise the respective applicants' various projects. Applicants who are shortlisted for the position will be invited for interviews and oral project presentations.
