Postdoctoral Researcher in Cell, Tissue and Organ Engineering

Workplace Description

A vacant position is available in the research group for Cell, Tissue and Organ Engineering (www.bourginelab.com (http://www.bourginelab.com)) led by Paul Bourgine. The group specializes in the production of ossicles/bone tissue that recapitulates the structure and function of skeletal bone and bone marrow. In the long term, the research group aims to compile human-specific knowledge on how tissues are established and regenerated to develop new innovative treatment methods. The research group is part of the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine and Lund Stem Cell Center.

Job Responsibilities and Duties

The candidate will use human mesenchymal cells to create human in vitro and in vivo models of bone marrow. The projects consist of establishing relevant bone marrow models and utilizing them to understand cellular mechanisms in leukemia. Job duties include planning and executing projects to produce and characterize human ossicles as well as using organ-on-chip technology.

The postdoctoral duties include:

  • Working with laboratory animals
  • Cell culture work
  • Working with mesenchymal cells
  • Tissue dissection
  • Culturing various cell types
  • FACS and cell sorting
  • Molecular methods such as genotyping and RNA sequencing.
  • Data analysis

In addition, it also includes maintaining lab books and similar administrative tasks, as well as actively participating in seminars and other important meetings. Irregular working hours may occur.

Eligibility

Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled no later than at the time the employment decision is made, and proof that the eligibility requirement is met must have been submitted by this time. Primarily, the candidate who has obtained the degree within the last three (3) years will be considered. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, elected positions within trade unions, or other similar circumstances.

Assessment Criteria

At Lund University, a postdoctoral appointment should provide opportunities for scientific and pedagogical merit. Primarily, space is given for merit in research, but also to some extent for higher education pedagogical training. Teaching may also be included in the job duties. When hiring as a postdoctoral researcher, scientific ability in the subject area will be primarily considered.

Other Qualifications

The following are required for the position:

  • Doctoral degree in Medicine or Biology.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken.
  • Good collaboration and communication skills as well as critical thinking.
  • Ability to supervise younger students.
  • Attention to detail.

Desirable for the position is:

  • Documented knowledge and practical experience of:
  • Cell biology, including 2D/3D cell culture.
  • Flow cytometry.
  • RNA sequencing.
  • Handling and analysis of MSC/HSC cells and hOss histology.
  • Laboratory animals and production of human ossicles.
  • In vivo hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
  • In vitro organ-on-chip.
  • Experience with preclinical projects and human leukemia.
  • Knowledge in hematology.
  • A strong publication record with peer-reviewed articles.

Conditions

The position is a fixed-term employment for two years, 100% with a start date of 2026-03-01, or by agreement. Employment at Lund University is conducted in Sweden, so you are expected to perform your work on-site in Lund.

The employment is limited to at least two years, maximum three years according to the collective agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher (Arbetsgivarverket). A postdoctoral position is intended as an initial step in the career and as an opportunity to further deepen and broaden research competence.
