PhD Position in Chemistry Focused on Photocatalytic Reactions

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry.

Development of Photocatalytic Reactions

Design, synthesis, and evaluation of photocatalytic metal complexes and their application in organic synthesis and activation of small molecules. The project includes aspects of organic synthesis, coordination chemistry, and spectroscopy; the systems will be analyzed using a combination of traditional organic methods as well as electrochemical, spectroscopic, and photochemical methods. Part of the project will be conducted in collaboration with researchers at Uppsala University. Representative publications: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2023, 145, 22555 and Org. Lett. 2024, 26, 10752.

Job Responsibilities

Synthesis of ligands and complexes. Chemical and spectroscopic characterization of metal complexes, evaluation of photophysical and photochemical properties. Development of catalytic reactions and optimization of these reactions. Written and oral presentation of research results in research reports, research articles, and at conferences, group meetings, and departmental meetings. Supervision of project workers is likely to be part of the job.

The main task for a PhD student is to engage in their doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral courses. The job responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of the working time.

Qualifications

The applicant must have:

• completed a master's degree or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level (of which 15 higher education credits constitute independent work), with content relevant to the doctoral education or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either within or outside the country
• very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
• experience in organic or inorganic synthesis

Great importance will also be placed on personal qualities such as good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant is assessed to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral education based on their experience and competence.

Desirable/Meritorious

Experience with photochemistry, catalysis, or lanthanide/actinide chemistry is meritorious.

About the Position

The position is temporary, according to HF 5 chapter § 7. The extent is full-time. Start date 2025-03-01 or by agreement. Place of employment: Uppsala
