Department of Animal Bioveterinary Sciences

We are seeking a PhD researcher for a fixed-term assignment to compile and communicate a feasibility study on the reintroduction of the black stork to Sweden.

About the job

The purpose of the project is to conduct and communicate a feasibility study on the possibilities of initiating a reintroduction/re-establishment project for the black stork as a breeding bird in southern and central Sweden. The feasibility study should include an investigation of the need for (potential) ex situ measures, such as a pedigree analysis, acquisition, holding, and breeding of black storks. It should also clarify how any releases should be managed (transport, soft release, etc.), as well as compile the necessary permits and exemptions for ex situ purposes. Both the possibilities of spontaneously regaining black storks as breeding birds and achieving the same goal through habitat-enhancing measures and/or reintroductions should be assessed. The assignment includes organizing a seminar where the feasibility study is presented.

You will work independently with literature compilation and synthesis of the current state of knowledge, as well as visit restoration projects in England and Germany.

Your background

We are looking for a PhD researcher preferably with documented experience in restoration biology, reintroductions, and 'rewilding'. A driver's license is required. We want you to be proficient in both Swedish and English in writing and speaking. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
