Researcher in the connection between magma dynamics and crustal deformation

A significant part of the research within the program of Mineralogy, Petrology, and Tectonics deals with magma transport and storage in the crust. The research group is internationally leading in this field and combines methods from structural geology, volcanology, geophysics, and petrology. The research group and program are now looking for reinforcement by recruiting a researcher focused on structural geology and petrophysics of magmatic systems. The position is funded by project grants from the Swedish Research Council and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation for a limited duration.

Job Responsibilities

The researcher will be part of an international and multidisciplinary group where the tasks include planning and conducting fieldwork, sampling and structural geological measurements, preparing rock samples for analysis, analyzing microtextures with a polarizing microscope, performing measurements of magnetic properties and paleomagnetism, analyzing and interpreting structural geological, geochemical, and texture data. The tasks also include presenting and publishing scientific data and knowledge, supervising students, and teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels, collaborating with the research group and partners, and applying for research grants.

Qualifications

• PhD in geoscience or a related field.
• Fieldwork takes place in difficult terrain and requires excellent experience in field logistics and safety, physical ability to navigate and move around in mountainous areas, and a class B driver's license.
• Expert knowledge of magmatic intrusions, particularly related deformation within the magma and surrounding rock.
• Very good competence in the analysis of magnetic materials and properties within magmatic rocks, characterization of textures and microstructures using magnetic and petrographic techniques, as well as paleomagnetism of magmatic systems.
• Knowledge in magmatic petrology and geothermobarometry.
• Familiarity with relevant software for managing and analyzing the aforementioned data.
• Experience in teaching and supervising at undergraduate and advanced levels.
• Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
• We are looking for a self-driven and results-oriented person with good collaboration skills, a structured working method, and excellent problem-solving analytical ability.

Desirable/meritorious

Interest in and experience with research communication is meritorious.

About the Position

The position is permanent. The extent is full-time. Start date is 2025-02-15 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala
