PhD Positions in Mathematics Education

Description

The Faculty of Health, Nature and Technology announces two positions in the doctoral program culminating in a PhD in Mathematics with a focus on Mathematics Education at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The doctoral program is conducted within the framework of the research school REMATH II (Researching Practice-Based Mathematics Teacher Education), which is funded by the Swedish Research Council and is a collaboration between Stockholm University, Karlstad University, Linköping University, and Mälardalen University. The aim of the research school is to make visible how mathematics teachers' work and practice, at all levels of the school system, can be made accessible for teacher students' learning. The central question of the research school is what is required for mathematics teacher students to acquire the professional knowledge and skills needed for well-founded and equitable teaching.

The research school's focus is practice-based mathematics teacher education. This includes investigating how teachers' work can be made a learning object for teacher education, and how teacher education can be designed to contribute to a research-based mathematics teacher education. The research school welcomes, for example, projects that map current teaching and learning opportunities in mathematics teacher education, nationally or internationally comparative projects. Systematic studies of how the mathematical content interacts with its cultural, historical, and philosophical dimensions from a didactic perspective in mathematics teacher education are also welcome, as well as projects aimed at developing today's mathematics teacher education based on research. See also the REMATH website for further examples of the types of projects that can be included within the research school.

A total of nine PhD positions are announced within REMATH II, of which three are placed at Stockholm University; two at Karlstad University; two at Linköping University; and two at Mälardalen University. To be employed at a university, you must have submitted an application to that particular university.

This advertisement concerns two PhD positions at Karlstad University.

Responsibilities

As a PhD student, you primarily engage in your own doctoral education. The doctoral program, which consists of 240 higher education credits (hp) for the PhD and 120 hp for the licentiate degree, is an opportunity for studies with salary in combination with work and a chance to start an academic career. As a PhD student, you work independently and are prepared to contribute in various ways to the work and development of the subject and the department. You are given the opportunity to deepen your interests together with others. It may be relevant to participate in teaching and administration, known as departmental duties, by agreement. Such work can comprise a maximum of 20% of full working time. The work as a PhD student gives you great freedom to plan and structure your work, which requires commitment, drive, and the ability to organize your work to successfully complete a dissertation.

To contribute to a good working environment and support both the organization's and your own development as a researcher, you are present and actively participate in the daily work and community.

Eligibility and Admission

To be admitted to the doctoral program, you must meet both basic and specific eligibility requirements (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 § 35).

Basic eligibility is granted to those who have obtained a master's degree, completed course requirements of at least 240 hp, of which at least 60 hp at the master's level, or who have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in other ways, within or outside the country (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 § 39).

Specific eligibility to be admitted to the doctoral program in mathematics with a focus on mathematics education is granted to those who have obtained a master's degree that includes courses in mathematics and mathematics education corresponding to at least 90 higher education credits, of which at least 15 higher education credits for a thesis (independent project) at the master's level relevant to the doctoral program, or those who have a teaching degree, or equivalent according to older curricula, with a focus on mathematics.

Specific eligibility to be admitted to the doctoral program in mathematics with a focus on mathematics education is also granted to those who have acquired the prerequisites described in the above paragraph in another way, within or outside the country. Those who do not have 90 hp in mathematics but have acquired equivalent prerequisites in other ways can thus be assessed for equivalence.

In addition, to be admitted to the doctoral program, you must be assessed to have the ability to benefit from the education (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 § 35). Admission is based on individual assessment.
