Kemikum at Stockholm University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in structural analysis

Kemikum, with over 200 employees, is one of the largest institutions at Stockholm University.

The research at Kemikum spans all areas of chemistry including analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry, as well as organic chemistry. The research projects encompass both theory and experiments, fundamental research and applied projects. The focus is often on sustainable chemistry, but also includes advanced analytical methods for chemicals and materials. Kemikum has a well-developed research infrastructure with a variety of equipment supported by qualified staff researchers.

Kemikum also hosts the undergraduate education in chemistry and three master's programs; analytical chemistry, sustainable chemistry, and organic chemistry. Doctoral education is conducted in five areas; analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. Project Description

Structural analysis is a key component in the discovery of new compounds and materials. X-ray diffraction is currently the most important technique for determining 3D atomic structures, but requires large crystals that are often difficult to obtain. In 2013, Makoto Fujita's group developed the method using crystalline sponges that enable structural X-ray analysis of organic molecules without the need for crystallization. The concept was to capture and organize molecules in the pores of a porous crystalline solid - a 'crystalline sponge' - and make them observable by X-ray diffraction. The proposed project aims to develop a new high-throughput method with multi-component crystalline sponges. It includes the development of new high-capacity methods and software pipelines for automated structural analysis, new 'crystalline sponges', and the applications of the method.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, well-organized, and has a problem-solving mindset with the ability to work both independently and in a team. Experience in crystallography, electron diffraction, synthesis of metal-organic frameworks, and programming is desirable. Applicants must have good communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

In the project, you will engage in scientific research and education. You are also expected to instruct students and assist with project management.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a relevant PhD degree is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

It is advantageous if the PhD degree or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier obtained degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, union duties, service in civil defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.

In the appointment process, particular importance will be attached to scientific competence, relevant background knowledge, and motivation.

About the Employment

The position is full-time and is permanent, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date is 2026-02-01 or by agreement.
