Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Biology at Uppsala University
The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the activities are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several program educations, independent courses, and international master's programs within the medical faculty. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is about 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 850 active in the workforce. Vickovic Lab is hiring a postdoctoral researcher
Vickovic Lab at Uppsala University is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated, team-oriented postdoctoral computational biologist or statistician to expand computational efforts to understand disease mechanisms. We are interested in developing integrative multimodal data analysis tools that include single-cell data and spatially resolved omics data, imaging data, clinical phenotypes, variants, and genotypes. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of mathematical modeling, omics data analysis, workflow optimization, and resource building. The selected individual for this role would also collaborate closely with the New York Genome Center team, and there is an opportunity to spend an extended period in New York as a visiting researcher.
Responsibilities
- Develop new computational, machine learning, and statistical analysis methods to integrate and analyze large-scale, spatially resolved RNA-seq and genotypic data using current state-of-the-art technologies.
- Develop data analysis strategies, write algorithms, and distribute computational tools for exploring very large datasets. Develop a community resource that provides access to collected data.
- Work closely with experimental colleagues and cores to understand the nature of generated data.
- Actively participate in drafting manuscripts for publication and present at scientific conferences.
- Assist with peer and student mentorship.
- Share expertise and provide training and guidance to group members as needed.
Qualifications
- PhD in computational biology, statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in the same. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have completed their degree within the last three years will be considered. When calculating the three-year frame, the deadline for applications is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc.
- Previous experience with Bayesian inference, network closure, and image analysis is preferred, but exceptionally creative and driven scientists with interest and adaptability will be seriously considered.
- Strong oral and written communication, data documentation, and presentation skills are required.
- Experience in writing scientific articles for publication is required.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is required.
- Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills, as well as a willingness to work in a fast-paced team environment are required.
