We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who provide hope for the future. Staff who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling contemporary challenges. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and innovating, we together create a better future through both large and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us!
We are now seeking a PhD candidate in infrastructure informatics with a focus on semantic and goal-oriented communication, as well as cloud-assisted artificial intelligence and control systems.
Your Responsibilities
You will work on the ELLIIT-funded project “Safety-Critical Intelligent Machines with Cloud-Assisted AI and Control.” This project focuses on safety-critical intelligent machines, such as collaborative robots, rescue drones, or vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems, utilizing cloud-assisted AI and control systems. A major challenge in all cloud-assisted AI and control systems is delivering the right and significant piece of information to the right computation point (or actuator) at exactly the right time. To meet this challenge, you will focus on developing theoretical and algorithmic foundations for goal-oriented, semantics-aware communication that enables timely and reliable interactions between the cloud and the agent. For more details on semantic communication, see our overview article titled 'Semantic Communications in Networked Systems: A Data Significance Perspective', published in IEEE Network, vol. 36, July/August 2022.
The project is part of a collaboration between Linköping University and Lund University. Therefore, the research will be conducted in collaboration with Professor Maria Kihl, Department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University within the framework of ELLIIT.
As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20 percent of full-time.
Your Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has completed a master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or applied mathematics, or has completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or applied mathematics, or has acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.
For this position, we require the applicant to demonstrate very good mathematical maturity and possess strong programming skills. Furthermore, a very good ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written, is required.
You should have a good ability to work independently, be goal-oriented, and possess strong problem-solving skills. It is also important that you are clear in your communication and have a good ability to collaborate with others.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.
Your Workplace
You will belong to the Department of Science and Technology (ITN), which is known for its activities in logistics, visualization, and organic electronics. We combine academic excellence with fruitful collaboration with the surrounding community. The position belongs to the Department of Communication and Transport Systems (KTS), which is one of the largest environments for research and education in the transport field in the Nordic countries. The activities are conducted within the units of Traffic Systems, Quantitative Logistics, Air Logistics, Railways and Public Transport, Mobile Telecommunications, Construction Logistics, and Construction Technology. The research is primarily externally funded and is carried out in close collaboration with industry, authorities, and society. Within undergraduate education, we are responsible for six educational programs.
The position is located at the unit for Mobile Telecommunications. You will be funded by and will be part of ELLIIT (Excellence Center Linköping-Lund in Information Technology), a research environment within the government-funded strategic research area of IT and Mobile Communication.
