Working as a VTS Operator at the Swedish Maritime Administration
The Swedish Maritime Administration offers safe and modern waterways with service around the clock. We have an exciting operation with many interesting and developing positions. If you are interested in making a difference, both in terms of the environment and safety, then the job as a VTS Operator/Traffic Operator is for you.
As a VTS Operator, you will work with modern technology to monitor and provide information to vessels about traffic conditions, any errors in fairway markings, and other obstacles in the waterways, as well as provide relevant traffic information to vessels in designated VTS Areas. You are thus an important cog in the effort to minimize the risk of maritime and environmental accidents and incidents in the area. Your tools include a VTS system with AIS and radar information, VHF radio, and computer.
Working as a Traffic Operator at the Swedish Maritime Administration
As a Traffic Operator, you will work with modern technology to assess, produce, and send out navigation warnings via VHF, MF, and Navtex (MSI - Maritime Safety Information). You will receive and register nautical error reports of maritime safety devices (SSA). The job also includes following up on actions from maintenance personnel and disseminating information internally.
You will act as a national coordinator for incident reporting and monitor maritime traffic based on applicable regulations. You will work with monitoring TSS areas and provide support for the MSW portal. IT readiness after office hours is included.
Who are you?
To be considered for the role of VTS/Traffic Operator, you must have a maritime captain's degree. You should have a good ability to express yourself in both Swedish and English, in both spoken and written form. The work is performed at irregular hours, both day and night, and prior to the start of employment, a valid medical certificate for seafarers or another certificate ensuring fitness for night work is required. Previous experience as a watch officer is an advantage.
We will place great emphasis on your personal qualities. The job involves many external and internal contacts, so openness, service, communication skills, and teamwork are very important qualities. You must also have good planning and multitasking abilities and be meticulous.
We have high demands on our employees' safety and confidentiality awareness. The position is classified in a security class, and a security review with background checks and registry checks will be conducted before a hiring decision is made. For this level of security classification, there is no requirement for Swedish citizenship.
