Join a Unique Work Environment!

As a Museum Guide at Skansen, you contribute to the guest experience by sparking curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking about the historical perspective. You are our face to the public and an important part of our team in the Cultural History Department.

Skansen is much more than just an open-air museum and a zoo – it is a place that welcomes over 1.5 million visitors from all corners of the world each year. Here, culture, animals, and nature blend in a way that few other places can match. Our core values Welcoming, Responsible, Surprising, and Together describe the environment and the expectations placed on our employees.

Role Description

“As a museum guide, you help create a lively and credible historical environment where our guests experience a journey through time and space. It’s magical!” This is what Monica Tornberg, head of the Museum Guide group, says – and she might be your future boss?

As a Museum Guide, you take an active role as a communicator and interpreter of cultural history. In front of Skansen's guests, both big and small, you demonstrate connections in time, space, and social environment with the aim of increasing understanding of historical contexts and people's living conditions in the current environment. You provide the historical perspective on our present and future, thereby counteracting prejudices and stereotypes of history. You are credible in your communication and contribute to providing Skansen's guests with a holistic experience.

Your Tasks Include:

  • Facilitating communication in a cultural historical environment based on our museum pedagogical frameworks
  • Engaging with guests and communicating through your voice, body language, and practical activities
  • Supervising and taking responsibility for the house and its contents during working hours
  • Wearing cultural historical attire as part of guest interaction

Good to Know

The work is on a rolling schedule, which means you need to be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. You must be able to work at least one of the following three periods:

  • High summer June 16 – August 17
  • Late summer August 18 – September 28

Training and orientation take place a few days before each period begins, and we have a mandatory information day in mid-April. The position is part-time, approximately 50 - 85%.

Who Do We Think You Are?

You have studied cultural historical subjects in some form and have a genuine interest in sharing your knowledge with others. You have previous work experience in a service role or with significant contact with people. You also need to have very good language skills in Swedish and English, as much of the communication occurs in English with our international guests.

It is advantageous if you also have any of the following:

  • Pedagogical education
  • Craft education
  • Experience in acting, theater, or storytelling roles.
  • Pedagogical experience, especially from activities aimed at children
  • Skills in crafts, handicrafts, food, music, or drama
  • Good knowledge of other languages besides Swedish and English
  • Experience from museum activities

You have a genuine interest in meeting people and are enthusiastic in your way of communicating. You have a high ability to collaborate and enjoy social work. You adapt easily to new people and situations. The work requires you to be service-oriented, actively attentive, and accommodating in your interactions.

  • You see that our core values are something you can clearly identify with:

The Team and Your Colleagues

Skansen's Cultural History Department consists of three units; the Collection Unit, the Educational Unit, and the Costume and Textile Unit. The department is responsible for managing the collections, for the cultural historical communication that originates from Skansen's museum buildings and object collections, and aims to bring Sweden's history to life.

The Educational Unit's core activities are based on folk education. Using documented knowledge and in the most credible way possible, we depict Sweden's cultural history and place our houses, farms, traditions, customs, and crafts in their historical context.

Skansen is an employer that actively works for diversity and sees differences between people as a strength. We want to reflect the society we operate in and seek people of all ages and from all parts of the world.

We work with an inclusive recruitment process, where competence and nothing else is at the center to find the right colleague. Therefore, we ask you to answer a few selection questions. We want to compare candidates who meet the basic requirements in as objective and fair a way as possible, without prejudices or preconceptions based on, for example, gender, age, or origin.
