Do you want to work at the center of economic policy in Sweden?
Are you an economist or a quantitatively inclined social analyst with a strong interest in society and practical problem-solving? Then we can offer an exciting position in the structure unit at the Ministry of Finance's budget department, in the heart of Swedish administration.
Your workday. Sweden's tomorrow.
The budget department plays a central role in the Government Offices and leads and coordinates the government's work on the state budget. We review all government decisions that have fiscal, organizational, and macroeconomic consequences. The budget department strives to ensure that public funds are used as effectively as possible. Our guiding stars are good budget discipline, macroeconomic efficiency, and high cost-effectiveness. The department analyzes the efficiency of society's resource use, provides advice on the design of economic policy, and participates in economic policy cooperation within the EU and OECD. We are also responsible for structural issues in the Swedish economy and the EU's public finance system.
Responsibilities and tasks
As a staff member in the structure unit at the budget department, you will work to increase macroeconomic efficiency and cost-effectiveness in economic policy at the national and EU levels. Your overall task is to support the budget department in reviewing and developing proposals for appropriate measures to promote sustainable growth and effective resource use in the economy within one or more policy areas. This may involve identifying efficiency-enhancing measures and the need for structural reforms, using research results to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of various reforms, and assisting with advice and training on macroeconomic analysis. The unit also offers good opportunities to participate in economic policy cooperation within the EU and OECD. Depending on interest and suitability, you may also work in one of the department's other units.
The budget department is characterized by a strong team spirit. Our responsible tasks and knowledge-intensive environment require good cohesion. “Next to the Minister of Finance, the most important client is the colleague who needs help,” summarized one of our employees' attitudes in the department. Another employee describes it as “A workplace with high-performing colleagues but where the atmosphere is unpretentious and without sharp elbows.” As an employee with us, you will become part of that culture.

Your background
We are looking for someone with a degree in economics or a similar field that the employer considers equivalent. You have at least three years of professional experience in qualified macroeconomic analysis work or work within the framework of relevant doctoral education.
A degree from a doctoral program in economics or another similar field perceived as relevant by the employer is an advantage. It is also advantageous if you have experience working in the Government Offices, the investigative agency, or other public administration, as well as in-depth knowledge of transport economics, environmental economics, public economics, industrial organization, or any other of the unit's areas of analysis.
Your qualities
You have excellent analytical skills, good judgment, and strong communication skills in both spoken and written form. As a person, you are responsible and driven. You are good at collaborating, can quickly grasp new issues, and work towards tight deadlines. We will place great emphasis on your personal qualities.
Other
In this recruitment process, we use work samples in the selection process. As a first step, we would like you to attach an A4 page with a maximum of 600 words to your application, analyzing a current social issue and proposing a solution.
We also ask that you attach your university transcripts. You do not need to be a Swedish citizen to be employed, but the work requires very good knowledge of Swedish and English. The application and analysis of the social issue should be in Swedish.
