Scrapping bonus increased to 25,000 SEK – how to get the grant when you switch to an electric car
The government has decided to raise the scrapping bonus from 10,000 to 25,000 SEK for individuals who scrap an older car with a combustion engine while simultaneously purchasing or leasing an electric car. The aim is to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and reduce the climate impact of the transport sector.
How the new scrapping bonus works
The increased bonus applies to individuals who:
- Scrap a passenger car in class I with a combustion engine and emission class Euro 4 or older.
- Have owned the car since September 6, 2023.
- Have completed an approved inspection between July 6, 2022, and September 6, 2023.
- Scrap the car at an authorized car scrapper no earlier than August 20, 2024.
- Purchase or lease a new or used electric car (classified in emission class Electric) no earlier than August 20, 2024.
- Own or lease the electric car for at least one year from the registration date.
Both the scrapping and the purchase or lease of the electric car must be registered in the vehicle traffic register before an application can be made. Applications are made via the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's e-service and are open until August 19, 2025.
Retroactive support and expanded conditions
The change also means that:
- Individuals who have already been granted the previous bonus of 10,000 SEK can have their application reassessed and receive the difference of 15,000 SEK.
- Vehicles with emission class Euro 5 will be included in the support from the date the regulation comes into force, which will be no earlier than June 2025.
- The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning will have the opportunity to make exceptions from certain requirements, such as proof of receipt and registration in the vehicle traffic register, to facilitate for applicants who have faced administrative hurdles.
The purpose of the increase
Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L) emphasizes that the electrification of the vehicle fleet is central for Sweden to reach net-zero emissions by 2045. The increased scrapping bonus is part of the government's measures to create conditions for more people to switch to electric vehicles.
How to apply
Applications for the scrapping bonus are made via the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's e-service. To apply, you need to:
- Have e-identity.
- Provide the registration number for both the scrapped car and the purchased or leased electric car.
- Certify that you do not have any overdue vehicle-related debts.
- Confirm that the electric car has not been owned by a close relative and that it will not be used in business activities.
