About the position
You will greatly benefit from your software development skills and your interest in science and societal benefit. The main focus of this recruitment is on system and model development within meteorology. As a software developer at SMHI, you will be part of a team and have the opportunity to delve into science, while our technical ecosystem (new data formats, a changed data flow, new societal needs) requires constant monitoring and changes. We work in a Linux environment, with large data volumes and high availability requirements.
You will be part of one of our development teams in meteorology where we work together to find solutions that function well from a holistic perspective. The work is varied and largely based on collaboration within and outside the team. The team works both with the management and development of meteorological systems and deals with forecast data coming from numerical models such as observation systems including radar, satellites, and weather stations. Development primarily occurs for internal needs, but data and products are also used externally. All servers where tools and programs are installed are in Linux.
You will primarily work on improving our operational meteorological forecast products and warnings. The job includes building new and further developing existing models and methods as well as activities involving the development and application of machine learning methods.

We prefer that you have a few years of work experience, but we also welcome recent graduates. We place great importance on your ability to develop and support others in the team, whether the role is new to you or you have many years of experience.
For the position, the following is required:
- Good programming skills in Python or equivalent languages.
- Experience in a Linux environment, as all servers where tools and programs are installed are in Linux.
- Good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written (equivalent to B1)
- Fluent English, both spoken and written
Meritorious for the position is:
- Experience working with modern development environments and technologies such as scientific computing libraries, GIS, container technology, databases, machine learning, parallel programming, and agile working methods.
- Knowledge in natural sciences, especially weather and climate
As a person, you have good problem-solving analytical skills and can translate customer requirements and ideas into cost-effective system solutions. The work also involves a lot of collaboration and many contacts, both within and outside SMHI. Your good ability to collaborate and your ability to focus on customer needs will be very useful. Planning, organizing, and prioritizing your work effectively is a given for you, and you will greatly benefit from this in this role. Of course, you also have a strong interest in software development and are driven to deliver good results.
What can we offer you?
At SMHI, you will become part of a knowledgeable team where you work closely with colleagues with different competencies. The work takes place in a dynamic environment where we often work in smaller projects, but where we can quickly adapt based on the needs of the business. You will delve into technology and science that makes a real difference. As a government employee, you are offered secure conditions, good pension solutions, a generous wellness allowance, etc. We also have an active association life and social activities.
Welcome to a workplace where your competence makes a difference – every day, all year round.
