Utilization of Residual Streams from the Food Chain for a More Resilient Food System

Doctoral Education Subject: Technology

Content Description:

We are looking for a doctoral student who can work on mapping residual streams from the Swedish food chain and analyzing alternative uses. This work includes identifying the types of waste and by-products that arise from the Swedish food chain, their nutritional content and possible health effects, when during the year they occur, and where in the country. This is to assess which residual streams have the greatest potential to be utilized as ingredients for food. Finally, it also includes assessing how these residual streams can be used in the event of crises and wars to strengthen Sweden's food preparedness.

The work is conducted within PLENTY - a center for symbiotic and circular food supply led from KTH. The work is carried out in collaboration with stakeholders and project partners, which may involve travel for work.

Qualifications:

Requirements:
  • Master's degree in a relevant field such as technology, food science, or environmental science.
  • The holder of the position must be able to communicate fluently in English.
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of food waste and by-products from food production.
  • Knowledge of or experience from the Swedish food system.
  • Experience in collecting and compiling food waste statistics.
  • Experience in life cycle assessment.
  • Experience in analyzing resilience.
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish.

Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities, such as collaboration skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work independently.

To be eligible for doctoral education, a degree at the advanced level or at least four years of full-time studies, of which at least one year at the advanced level, is required.
