Area Description

Molecular medicine is an interdisciplinary research field aimed at clarifying biological processes at the molecular level to improve human health and prevent diseases.

The area encompasses advanced experimental and bioinformatics methods, relevant to clinical practice as well as health care. Within the research field, versatile technologies such as genomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and single-cell analysis are combined to enhance understanding of childhood leukemia and potential new treatment methods. A central focus area is technology development in molecular profiling, particularly through large-scale DNA sequencing analysis and innovative methods for data integration to identify biomarkers and new therapeutic targets for improved diagnostics and treatment of childhood cancer.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities include research, teaching, supervision of doctoral students, administration, as well as leadership and development of a research group within molecular medicine and research infrastructure in the genomics area. The research, which focuses on childhood cancer research with an emphasis on exploring molecular and cellular mechanisms in pediatric leukemia and other childhood cancer forms, should be conducted using innovative and pioneering methods aimed at current and future research questions within molecular medicine and childhood cancer. Advanced data analysis and bioinformatics, particularly regarding the integration of omics data, as well as projects where clinical, experimental, and bioinformatics approaches are combined are included in the job responsibilities.

Teaching is primarily conducted within the biomedical program but also includes standalone courses in areas such as molecular medicine, childhood cancer, bioinformatics, and translational medicine. The emphasis is on teaching in molecular medicine, bioinformatics, and large-scale genomic analyses, related to childhood cancer and technology development. Teaching is conducted at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The job responsibilities include integrating research and education in such a way that students have access to the latest scientific advancements and experimental methodologies.

The job responsibilities also include scientific leadership for the SNP&SEQ technology platform at the Department of Medical Sciences. The platform offers large-scale genomics services and related support to researchers in Sweden and is one of the largest units within the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), which is one of Sweden's largest research infrastructures. The applicant is expected to actively contribute to the further development of the platform by identifying and implementing new methodologies and technologies. The applicant is also expected to ensure funding for the platform through strategic research applications and to participate in the platform's management group to contribute to strategic decisions and provide advice and support to researchers using the platform's resources. Additionally, administrative tasks within the Department of Medical Sciences and SciLifeLab's committees and councils are included, as well as continuously staying updated on developments in the fields of molecular medicine, childhood cancer, and related societal areas.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible for appointment as a university lecturer is one who has demonstrated pedagogical skill and has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. (HF 4 kap 3 §) According to the Employment Ordinance for Uppsala University (AO), the general eligibility requirement for teachers is that the applicant must have the ability to collaborate and otherwise meet the suitability requirements needed to perform the job responsibilities well (AO 5 §).

The scientific competence must have been demonstrated through independent research efforts of high quality. The applicant's contributions to the international and national scientific community will be assessed based on the quality and extent of scientific publications (see AO 34 §). The requirements for international merit will be assessed with regard to the character of the subject and specific conditions.

The pedagogical competence must have been demonstrated through merits in education and teaching (see AO 22 §). A prerequisite for pedagogical competence to be considered is completion of relevant higher education pedagogical training, comprising at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the higher education pedagogical training can be completed during the first two years of employment.

The applicant must have experience in leading accredited laboratory operations, research activities, and research infrastructure. The applicant must have documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. See 6 § AO.
