Subject Description

Urban and regional planning as a field encompasses the community planning, with a focus on physical planning, that takes place at the municipal and regional levels. The focus is primarily on municipal detailed plans and comprehensive plans that govern long-term land and water use. The plans include issues such as building development, conservation, and conditions for sustainable development. Topics addressed include housing, transportation, social and environmental aspects, and economic conditions. Corresponding issues are addressed at the regional level. The subject also covers methods for developing planning materials, such as site analyses, forecasts, implementation plans, impact assessments, and similar: as well as analyses of democracy, power relations, and other conditions for the implementation and outcomes of planning processes.

Urban and regional planning focuses on creating sustainable community development, addressing time spans from historical development to the present and desired future development. The subject area is interdisciplinary and builds on theories and methods from several different fields of science.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities include teaching primarily at the undergraduate level in the form of course responsibility, conducting education, supervision, and examination, as well as pedagogical development work and educational administration. The work also involves participation in collaborations within KTH and with community actors in urban and regional planning.

Certain research tasks may be included in the employment through externally funded projects. This may involve research in collaboration with municipalities and other community actors to contribute to network building, research-based teaching, or the development of the institution's educational offerings. It may also be relevant to participate in research related to pedagogical development.

Eligibility

Eligible for appointment as a lecturer is one who has:

  • completed a degree at the undergraduate or advanced level in the subject of the appointment or has equivalent competence.
  • professional skills that are significant in relation to the subject matter of the appointment and the tasks to be included in the appointment.
  • demonstrated pedagogical skills.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a lecturer at KTH are those specified in section 1.5 of KTH's employment regulations in relation to the established employment profile.

It is of utmost importance that the applicant has:

  • pedagogical skills. The assessment of pedagogical skills should also consider the person's ability to develop as a teacher in the long term.
  • subject-specific skills relevant to the content of the appointment.
  • good knowledge of Swedish planning at the local and regional levels, as well as the Swedish planning system.
  • the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community.
  • administrative skills.
  • the ability to develop and lead activities and staff, as well as collaborative skills. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.

It is of secondary importance that the applicant has:

  • higher education pedagogical training.
  • professional skills relevant to the content of the appointment.
  • skills regarding development work in the field.

It is also of importance that the applicant has:

  • work experience outside of higher education.
